They arrived back at the pack house, just before night fall. Steven showed Eric to his room, and asked him to stay there until the morning, he would have some food sent up. Eric said nothing, but all of a sudden felt like he was a prisoner, which he confirmed when he heard the door lock.
Meanwhile, Jake went down to see how Ella was doing. She was awake and staring at the ceiling, ignoring everything around her.
“She woke up a few hours ago,” The doctor told Jake. “She hasn’t said anything, but her vital signs are off the charts. It’s like she’s fighting herself.”
“She probably is,” Jake said as he sat down and touched Ella’s hand. Ella turned and looked at him, the bright blue eyes blinked and she smiled. Her wolf was in control again. Then he eyes went back to the pale blue, and she turned her head back and looked at the ceiling.
“Ella,” Jake said quietly. “Little love, can you hear me?”
“Yes,” Ella said. “She winning.”
“Who is winning?”
“My wolf… she wants you… she won’t stop…” tears started rolling down her cheeks. “It hurts... the pain... make it stop… make her go away!”
Ella continued staring at the ceiling, but in her mind, she was being chased by a rosy coloured wolf. Mate with him! Bite him! The wolf kept yelling at her.
No! Go Away! Ella yelled in her head as she kept running. She was running through a forest. The wolf was behind her, and a tornado was in front of her. That’s how she met Jake, that’s how the wolf came back. She hated the tornado... She hated Jake. It was his fault she felt like she was going in crazy. His fault that she was hurting so much.
It’s not his fault! The Wolf yelled at her. You listened to that Alpha Man… You did this to us!
Go Away! Ella yelled. Her whole body went ridged, then she started to seize. The doctor pushed Jake away as he administer some Dilantin to calm her seizure.
“Doctor?” Jake asked quietly, not understanding what was going on.
“He mind…” the doctor signed. “I don’t know. I have called in a specialist from a few packs over. He deals with mind splits in wolves. He has had some great breakthroughs in his research.
“Mind spilt? What’s that? What does that mean?”
The doctor signed. He took Ella’s temperature, then turned back to Jake. “Our wolves are a part of us. We are connected to them, feeling their pain, their love, their wants and needs, as they feel us. Normally we have a respect for our other halves. Ella, seems to be fighting her wolf. They are not connected, they don’t feel what we feel.” The doctor frowned, he was trying to explain this as simple as possible for Jake. Jake looked so confused.
“But her wolf is inside her?”
“Yes, but they are fighting for control…” The doctor paused. “You love your wolf, he loves you. Ella hates hers. She doesn’t want a wolf. She has abandoned what she is. So instead of them working together, they are trying to destroy each other. Understand?”
“Her wolf is my mate…” Jake said slowly. “Her human isn’t.”
The Doctor nodded. “I’m sorry, Jake. When this happens to wolves, as very rare as it is, there no recovery. They either take their own lives, or go crazy and have to be contained.” He turned and walked out of the room, leaving Jake alone with a now sleeping Ella.
Jake sat down and look Ella’s hand. He had mated with her, he felt the bond, but he now understood that only half of her dead. Werewolves had to live in harmony with their wolves or they would not survive. The Doctor just told him, she was not going to survive. He was going to lose his mate, after how many years of looking.
He laid his head gently on her chest and cried.
**********
Steven found Jake sitting next to Ella’s bed the next morning. He had bought Eric with him, and they just stood and looked at the tried looking man.
“Jake” Steven touched his shoulder. “You should go get some sleep.”
“No.” Jake said as he stroked Ella’s hand. Her eyes were opened again and she was staring at the ceiling.
“What is wrong with her?” Eric asked as he approached the young girl. She had the same look as she did when she was ten. An adorable little girl that grew to a beautiful woman.
“Doctor said Mind Split…” Jake muttered. “She’s killing herself.”
“A Mind Split?” Eric repeated. “That’s rare in a true-born werewolf… More common in turned humans. I’m sorry I did that to her. I can try to reverse it?
“That’s won’t work,” a man with a deep Italian accent walked into the room. He was dressed in a black suit, covered by a white lab coat. The pack doctor followed him in.
“Alpha,” the Doctor nodded. “This a Dr. Anthony Siino. He is a specialist in Mind Splits.”
“I have dedicated my life to exploring the Wolf Gene in Humans, which leads to Mind Splits. I have only come across 2 other wolves who have suffered from what she is going through. Usually those are linked to a rejection of a mate. Was she rejected?”
“No. I’d never…” Jake said with a sign.
Eric signed, then turned to the doctor and told him the story.
“Fascinating…” Dr. Siino said as he looked over Ella’s vitals. “Maybe I can help her,” he said with a smile. “Please leave me alone with the patient so I can check her over.”
The men nodded, and left the room. The Pack Doctor closed the door, then walked down the hall. Jake just leaned against a wall.
“Nice place you have here,” Eric said as they stood there. “Dinner was lovely.”
Steven looked at Eric. “This is your fault, I don’t think you need to be so smug about it.”
“It’s not my fault that child bound herself to me,” Eric said. “I didn’t force her to make me her Alpha. Just like I didn’t force her to lock away her wolf. She was probably defective from the beginning…” He as cut off as an arm was pinned to his throat, as he was being pushed into a wall.
“Don’t you ever talk about my mate like that again!” Jake hissed in the old man’s face. “She is not defective. You used her!”
“Let Go Of Me!” Eric commanded. Jake tried to fight it, but he had to listen to the Alpha Command. He stepped back and blinked a couple times. He always obeyed Steven’s commands, but he had never felt compelled to follow them, like he just had.
Eric smiled and laughed. He looked over at Steven. “Your not even an Alpha to your Beta?”
“What?” Steven looked at Jake. “Jake?”
“I don’t know,” Jake said. “You are my Alpha, Steven. No matter what this old man says.” Jake grunted and moved to look in Ella’s room.
Eric just stood there with a smirk on his face.
“Once we have talked with the doctor, and taken care of Ella, I will have you escorted out of my territory, never to return or have any contact with any member of my pack.” Steven said.
“As you wish, Alpha. I didn’t want to come here in the first place.” Eric turned and looked at his son. He would have made a good Alpha.
They were called back into the room a short time later. Dr. Siino was looking at his tablet, making notes. He turned to the pack doctor. “How long will it take you to have her ready to leave?”
“Leave?” Jake took a step forward.
“Yes, she must come with me to my hospital, where I can monitor her closely.” Dr. Siino said. He turned to Steven, “I need you to release your Alpha hold on her. I think for her health she cannot be linked to a pack, or a mate.” He looked at Jake.
“I am not her Alpha,” Steven said. “He is,” he gestured to Eric.
“Wait, won’t the rejection harm her?” The Pack Doctor asked.
“Right now, she fighting over being a werewolf or a normal human. Her wolf is drawn to the Alpha and the mate. If we take those options away, they might learn to live in peace with each other, which will let her have a normal life. That is what you all want?
“Yes Dr. Siino,” The Alpha said. “Eric, please release her.”
“Very well,” Eric said. “I, Eric Williams, release Ella Owens from my pack, and am no longer her Alpha.”
Ella moaned and closed her eyes.
They then all looked at Jake.
He was standing there with tears in his eyes, his face frozen in anger. “I mated with her, I bit her. I. Will. Not. Reject. Her.”
“Jake you must,” Steven came forward and wrapped his arm around him. “You’re my best friend, my brother, I know how much this hurts, and how much you love her and cherish her. But you can never be together unless he make her better.” He looked over at Dr. Siino, giving him a pleading look. “They can mate again, once she is better, right Doctor?”
“Of course,” Dr. Siino said with a slight smile.
Jake knew it was a lie. He had waited so long for his mate, and now he had to give her up and be alone. He glanced over at his father. Father? The man abandoned him. Messed up his mate. And there he just stood as if he hadn’t a care in the world. Jake’s wolf was pacing wanting to attack.
I have to do this for her. Jake said to his wolf. His wolf howled in pain. I am sorry, my companion. We will get her back.
“I, Jake...” he paused and looked at his father. “I, Jake Williams.” He used his true last name now that he knew it. “Reject you, Ella Owens, as my mate.” He started to cry. His wolf was howling. He fell to his knees.
Ella moaned a little, then sat up. She looked around, her eyes a light blue. Her wolf was quiet. “What happened?” she asked.
“Ella,” Steven stepped over to her. “This is Dr. Siino. You are going to go with him. He’s going to help you.”
Ella looked at Dr. Siino, then down at Jake who was sitting on the floor crying. If she had paid attention, she would realize her wolf was crying too. Her wolf found her safe quiet spot, and was hiding again. Quite for now.
“Can Victor come?” Ella asked. Her human was in full control, and her human heart wanted Victor.
“Who is Victor?” Dr. Siino asked.
“My boyfriend,” Ella said innocently, as if she didn’t even remember her mate.
Jake growled. He was so confused.
“Yes,” Steven said. “Victor will go with you.” He looked down at Jake. He had a feeling he would attack Victor for stealing Ella from him. He walked over and took Jake by an arm and forced him to stand up.
“Good Bye, Ella, have a good trip,” The Alpha said as he tried to pull Jake out of the room.
“No,” Jake growled pulled his arm from Steven’s grip. He turned and looked at Ella, who was looking a little embarrassed. Jake walked over to her, lifted her chin and looked in her eyes. “Ella?”
“Good bye, Jake,” Ella said. “I’m sorry I don’t love you. Thank you for beating up my father and bringing me here.”
Jake just stared at her.
Dr. Siino came over and whispered something in Ella’s ear. She nodded, then reached out and took Jake’s hand. She didn’t fully understand who this doctor was, but if he was going to stop the pain her wolf put her through, she was going to listen to him.
“I, Ella Owens, Reject you Jake, as my wolf’s mate.”
Jake stumbled back. His hear was breaking. His wolf was whimpering. He was angry, he was sad, he was broken. He looked around the room. They all let his happen. As her mate he should have helped her. He was a failure. Everything was falling apart.
In a blink of an eye, he shifted into his wolf, turned and ran out of the pack house, pushing down doors, knocking people aside. He smashed through the front door and started to run.
