Chapter 3

"Emery, if you don't get your fine ass back out there and go jump on that fine specimen of a man, then I will whoop your-" Caroline stops short when she sees me tugging my hoodie over my head hurriedly. "Sorry, Car, but I need to get out of here. It's an emergency." I practically shoved past her to get to the exit. "And tell Adrian to bar him. He broke that guy's arm, he's clearly dangerous." "Emery he broke the guy's arm because he assaulted you. It was the hottest thing I have ever seen." She swoons, and I resist the urge to agree with her, because that was the first time I had someone defend me so valiantly. So why was every instinct telling me to run? "I'll see you Monday, Car." I called out as I slammed the back door behind me. It was 10:41pm, I still had an hour until the worst of the drunks would roam the streets in drunken stupor. It was reasonably quiet and home was only a 20-minute walk. I had made this trip multiple times in the night along the main road. It was fine. I would be fine. Still, I pulled my hood up securely over my head to hide and not draw attention to myself. I can feel someone watching me, the same eerie feeling as earlier back at the bar. I look over my shoulder, the path is dimly lit but I can make out the fact no one is behind me. "It's rude to ignore people when they ask if you're okay." I almost walked straight into a wall of pure muscle. Large hands grab onto my upper arm to steady as I look up at the stranger in shock. "It's even ruder to run away after I broke the arm and nose of the man who assaulted you." "Are you any better than the man who assaulted me right now?" I asked, nodding at his hands clasped tightly around my arms. "Because I am more scared now than I was at the bar." "No you're not." He growled, his grip tightening as he leaned down, bringing his face closer to mine. "I can see it. You're not scared, it's something else... Something like curiosity." One of his hands leaves my arm to push my hood down, his intense gaze skimming over my features and I can't help but wonder what he thinks of me, does he find me as attractive as I find him? Is he repulsed by me? "Have we met before?" I blurt out before I could stop myself, and he chuckled softly in response, brushing the hair back from my face. "No. I would remember a face like yours. You really shouldn't be walking alone at night, there are bad people out there." "And you're not one of them?" "Darling, I'm the worst." I don't have a chance to reply before I am distracted by a noise from the alleyway nearby. I only glance away for a second and when I look back, the beautiful stranger was gone. - I practically ran home, the usually 20-minute journey only taking 7. It was almost 11. I was back early and all I could think about is how i would explain the day to Jodie. When I place my key into the lock I notice the door isn't just unlocked but also slightly ajar. Jodie always locked the door behind her. "Jodes?" I called out as I pushed the door open. "Are you okay? You left the door open?" I couldn't ignore the uneasy feeling that formed in the pit of my stomach. "Jodie?" I called out again, only to be greeted by silence. When I stepped into the living room, it was like a bomb had gone off. All our furniture had been flipped over, everything fragile was smashed to pieces. I run from room to room and they're all the same. Someone or something had been here & I had no idea if Jodie was here when it happened. .
