Chapter 16: The Return

716 Words
The decision to return to the Philippines weighed heavily in Rosie's heart. The memories she had lost, the life she had once lived, all remained shrouded in darkness, waiting to be unveiled. Now, with little Psalm in her arms, she felt an even stronger pull to rediscover her roots and to raise her child in the land of her birth. One evening, as the sun cast long shadows in their cozy home in the United States, Rosie turned to Callum, her eyes filled with curiosity and longing. "Callum," she began, her voice soft, "tell me about my life before the accident, before I lost all my memories." Callum shifted uncomfortably, the weight of her question pressing upon him. He had been dreading this moment, fearing that Rosie's quest for her past might trigger memories that were better left buried. But he couldn't deny her, not when he saw the earnestness in her eyes. He took a deep breath and began, "Rosie, you had a wonderful life in the Philippines. You were close to your family, and they loved you deeply. Your parents…" he hesitated, "your parents passed away a long time ago, but they were incredibly proud of the person you had become." Rosie listened intently, a mixture of sadness and curiosity in her eyes. "What about my childhood? Did I have any siblings?" Callum nodded, deciding to keep his response vague. "Yes, Rosie, you had siblings. You had a happy childhood, surrounded by love and laughter." As the conversation continued, Rosie asked about her favorite places, her friends, and the traditions of her homeland. Callum provided as much information as he could without revealing the complexities and dangers of her past life. "I want to raise Psalm there," Rosie said with a determined smile, her eyes fixed on her son, who played with his toys nearby. "I want him to know the Philippines, to be close to my roots." Callum couldn't help but feel the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. He was anxious, hesitant, and afraid of what might happen if they returned. He had kept Rosie's true past a secret, believing it was for her own safety. "Rosie," he said cautiously, "I understand your desire, but we need to be careful. Going back to the Philippines could trigger your memories, and there are things you don't know… things that might be better left forgotten." Rosie looked at Callum with a furrowed brow, her curiosity piqued. "What do you mean, Callum? What is it that you're not telling me?" Callum hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "There are people from your past, Rosie, people who might not have your best interests at heart. I fear that if we return, your path might cross with someone you used to know." Rosie's eyes widened with surprise and a hint of fear. She had sensed that there was more to her past than Callum had revealed, but she couldn't fathom the depths of the mystery that shrouded her forgotten memories. As they continued to plan their journey back to the Philippines, Rosie remained unaware of the intricate web of secrets that surrounded her. Callum had carefully crafted a narrative that painted a different picture of her past, one that shielded her from the dangers that lurked in the shadows. The day of their flight approached, and Rosie's excitement grew with each passing moment. She imagined introducing Psalm to her family, showing him the beauty of her homeland, and immersing him in the rich culture that had once been her own. Callum, however, carried the burden of his fear. He feared that Rosie's memories might return, that the past she had forgotten would resurface, and that she would be confronted with a reality she might not be ready to face. The plane ticket to the Philippines represented both a journey of rediscovery and a voyage into the unknown. Rosie remained blissfully unaware of her true past, while Callum carried the weight of a secret that had the power to reshape their lives. As the aircraft's engines roared to life and they embarked on their flight, Rosie couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation and hope. The Philippines awaited them, a land of both forgotten memories and uncertain futures, where Rosie's quest for her true self would finally begin.
