Chapter 2

494 Words
I had never seen a cat so white. She was so white that even snow looked dull beside her. Snowball opened her eyes the day she was born. On day 2, she learned to walk. On day 3, she opened the door by herself, bit through the milk delivery crate with her sharp teeth, and drank all the fresh milk in the entire apartment building. For 3 straight years, I worked myself to the bone and finally managed to keep our little family of one person and three cats alive. Looking back, I couldn't help sighing. The four of us had depended on each other through everything. No matter how hard life became, we had made it through. But now the apocalypse was coming. We were talking about zombies. They were strong, fast, and endless in number. One snap of those teeth could kill a person. My cats usually ate chicken, duck, mice, and rabbits. Even if I had fed them wolves, they still couldn't shield me from zombies. I watched the clock tick down minute by minute. Less than 23 hours remained until the apocalypse. I definitely couldn't bear to let my cats die. But with the little money I had, I couldn't buy loyal, powerful pets, and I couldn't tame wild animals either. What was I supposed to do? Just sit here and wait to die? After weighing it over and over, I gritted my teeth and made up my mind. Fine. I would prepare as much as I could. As long as I didn't go outside and fight zombies head-on, I might still have a chance. If I had enough food, I could hole up in this rental apartment. I would survive as long as I could. Every extra day would count as a win. Once I figured that out, I stopped hesitating and immediately joined the crowds fighting for supplies. The apocalypse was almost here, and society had already fallen into disorder. Everyone was scrambling everywhere for powerful pets that could keep them alive. Taking advantage of the chaos, I slipped into a supermarket warehouse about 1.2 miles away and moved out several hundred pounds of canned food, rice, flour, cooking oil, and other staples in batches. With all that commotion, all three cats still slept through the entire thing. Lately, they seemed to be sleeping more and more. By the time supplies filled my room from wall to wall, I was drenched in sweat and close to collapse. But it was still not time to rest. I went to a home improvement store, bought steel plates, and reinforced every door and window so they could hold off the zombies a little longer. When everything was finally done, I collapsed onto the floor and was just about to close my eyes for a short nap. Then I heard the lock turning at the door. Griffin burst in with a group of people behind him. "Leave the supplies and get out!"
