It was the first time I had ever seen Max open his eyes. His sockets were pitch-black, and golden light glowed from within. He stayed curled in my arms, perfectly comfortable, and lazily lifted his head toward the three mastiffs. Their bloody mouths were right in front of me. A few drops of drool even landed on my forehead. But the pain I expected never came, because the three mastiffs stopped right in front of me. They froze and stared into Max's golden eyes. As if enchanted, they suddenly scrambled backward over each other. Vanessa's mastiffs weren't weak. They even seemed to have a trace of wolf blood in them.
