Cecily
“Cecily, Cecily calm down now my child.” My mother’s growling laugh rumbled in her chest.
“Mother, what are we learning today? Are you going to teach me some more magic or how to do my half-dragon shift fully?” I asked, looking at her excitedly.
“You are so close to that already child. Today we learn about some more of the outside world beyond the borders of the mountains and forests.” My mother moved her big head down so her giant electric blue eye was on me. Letting me know what she was about to tell me was very important, and that I should not forget it. “As you know my child, my kind do not care much for me, for I am very different. Ice dragons and Water dragons do not do well together, though in a fight together they can be quite formidable. And I being a child of both is quite unheard of. That is why I am seen with fear and hatred in some other dragon's eyes. Though my case is much more different than yours, my dear.” She smiled at me then.
“You Cecily are very unique. There may not be many of you left or any at all. You may very well be the last of your kind, my child.” There was a sadness in her eyes as she spoke.
“But why is that?” I moved closer to her, needing to be closer.
“There were some who did not trust the shifters of your unique nature. They feared them. Believed they could not be trusted because they could be anything, go anywhere, be a spy and no one would be the wiser. So other shifters who could only shift into one other form and other races went to war with them. It was a hard war though they were outnumbered greatly because of their abilities they fought long and hard. But it still was not enough. In order to survive some went into hiding, others surrendered though that may have been a fate worse than death.” Mother stretched out her wing, as she pulled it back in she rested her wing around me.
“The ones that surrendered did they get killed too?” I leaned against her. as my throat started to feel dry.
“In time they died. You see they were taken as slaves, used as spies or just for their magic. Your people were well gifted in magic as well, like some other races.” Mother talked as if she was there, as if she had lived through it.
“Because I am different, people hate me?” I whispered out.
“They let fear guide them. Leaders who fear change or anything different may see it as a threat to them. In doing so they start wars, they say it is for their people and that is rarely true. I have heard of some good Kings. Though there are those with evil intentions who sometimes come into power by many different means and are consumed with the need for more power. Those kingdoms are always at war and soon become no more. That is how many felt about your kind. Not all though.” She looked down at me snuggled up to her and partly hidden by her wing.
“Cecily you must promise me that you will not let anyone know what you can do or who you are. You will be hunted and if they catch you there is no telling what will happen to you. If you do find people who you can really trust, if they know then you may not feel completely alone. I do not know if you will find anyone else like you. If you keep traveling you can pass for a few different shifter races but you need to know much about them so that no one suspects anything. But you must promise me that you will not shift into your dragon form. If anyone saw that then they would know instantly what you are. There are not many of us dragons left and few that will even take human form. Though when they do they do not even come close to looking exactly human. They are taller; stronger, humans are drawn to their beauty, and they always have a marking on their body of a dragon. Swear to me now that you will not shift into your dragon form or even half shift unless it is absolutely necessary.” Mother’s voice held an edge to it.
“I promise mother, I swear it on my ancestors that I will not shift into my dragon form unless the situation is dire.” I looked her in the eye as I promised her.
My mother gave me her dragon smile “Thank you, my daughter.” Then it all disappeared.
