Even with the jeep getting to the actual town required a few hours' drive. The witch had seen to it that they wouldn't be stumbled upon easily, the queso remained did they play a part in that or an as that all the with? As they entered the town he couldn't help but feel like he was getting the answer to his question. There are probably people here that recognize one or both of us and we don't need that right now. "We should keep going and find a different place to stop."
"What's the matter? The big baddie afraid someone'll recognize 'im?" Avril asked in the most condescending tone she could muster.
"Actually no you." He told her as she placed the car in park. Her smile was dead but her body ached and a fire was burning between her shoulders. She needed rest and no one was going to make her push beyond her limits so she just opened her door for them both to slide out.
The motel was like any other with a chest-height counter and a door with a little bell on it. When it rang the attendant called out and Avril leaned against it with the left side of her body. “How can I help you?”
“I need uh room fur two,” she called back.
Her voice must have startled him as suddenly there was a crashing sound from the back as the person hurried to the front. “Avril,” he said breathing deeply. “I thought they'd killed you.” the man said looking from Avril to Devin and their sand-covered clothing. “But I see now that they just took you to see the witch…Not quite sure if they meant to or not but…Seems your friends have a funny way of helping you Devin.” sighing the man took a key off the wall. “They don't know you are alive here, lucky for you two. Plenty of people would like to see the two of you dead. They must've done it about twenty miles South of here. I got a few of them as they took off but they wouldn't tell me what they were going to do to you. None of them have come back so I think the witch got them. The funny thing about her is she'll kill everyone but the ones she's taking care of...or at least that's what I've heard.” Avril nodded her head since she hadn't been able to get a word in edge-wise, she had a feeling that wasn't particularly uncommon with him. “Well here's your key, be careful,” he said, leaving them to go back to his work. He'd never told them his name.
Getting cleaned up and being respectful of another person is always a challenge but add a cuff that required you to be within inches of each other and well… "You sure you don't want to just join me in the shower?" Devin smiled a ridiculously flirty smile. Avril gave him a look and opened her mouth to protest but not before he already grabbed her up in his arms and into the bathroom, with a quick twist of the knob they were both in the shower with their clothing on. "Before you go getting upset we've been leaving a trail any tracer with half a marble could track." She gave a small nod and he moved his hand from her face.
"If you'd just bothered with half an explanation I think we could have managed a shower without half our clothes on. " Avril gave him a small smile hoping it was enough to show a partial interest. A slayer's memories are what made them who they were, their power, abilities, and strength all came from knowledge of one's self. To forget that- 'Forget.' The word echoed in her head but not in her voice.
**'You could forget, just forget it all and be with me. Isn't that what you want? We could go see her and you could forget it all?' The man in her memory asked. He was gorgeous, his hazel eyes looked like nebulas in the night sky and his 6 foot 2-inch frame towered over her 5 foot one. She reached a shaky hand out to his 5 o'clock and kissed him deeply. **
The feeling of water on her skin and the brush of another's lips brought her back to reality. "Justin." She moaned into his jaw.
"Justin." That name was enough to turn any moment cold but at the moment he felt freezing. That was his brother or was supposed to be and they weren't on the best terms now he remembered that much and for her to call him that name…his blood lust was trying to flare for other reasons now. He reached behind him to turn off the shower his eyes never leaving her. She'd started to shiver, water dropped down her long braids and locks smearing the remaining makeup on her face. She had a black halter top on with arm guards, not something most slayers would wear as it left her back exposed and cargo pants.
"Why are you staring at me?" She snapped her annoyance crawling over his skin, she was regaining her powers quickly but not her control.
"Why do you dress like that? I thought the courts had requirements for you." This time he tried to study her outside the corner of his eye as she opened her bag digging through more of the same before beginning the awkward process of dressing while cuffed. She'd refused to answer him and just shrugged when he realized he'd have to rip off his shirt.
She began to shiver as the air conditioner began to run. Looking at her shiver he knew that it was taking every bit of her strength not to go turn the air off. 'She's trying to look tough.' he smiled and pulled her against him letting his heart warm her as she cooled him. “Right now acting strong around me isn't gonna work,” he whispered in her ear. Avril started to pull away but when she felt the heat coming off his body she fell into him.”Why are you so warm?” She whispered, the sudden heat making her tired. "Wouldn't you like to know. ” he whispered back watching her drift off. Soon she will be remembering who she was and he wouldn't be able to mess with her like this anymore but he also wondered why she was so cold. Even born vampires like he was weren't usually warmer than slayers unless…
Avril sighed and snuggled closer to him waking him from his peaceful sleep. Against him the girl felt like ice; way too cold. Shaking her gently he watched her awake. There was no way she could be this cold and be alive...be human no way. Yet she appeared to be looking up at him and her eyes suddenly got a far-off look in them. 'She must be having another memory.' he thought as he watched her pupils dilate.
She saw the day she'd officially become a part of the court. Still the court's youngest member to date, Avril had quickly become their most important member. Avril was never given a choice as the others had. They knew that being the way she was she would be easily swayed. Her first big assignment had been Justin. Justin was wanted for the murders of over 571 people. Avril killed him herself.
Devin watched her quietly, some of his memories had returned the night before but it wasn't like this. She was fighting her memory like she didn't want to accept the memory. Avril's body began to stiffen and she started fighting him. Before long she was half hanging off the side of the bed and just as quickly she fell out of the memory. “You mind helping me up.” she snarled at him.
“If...that's what you want,” he replied not understanding. "Are you ok? What did you remember?"
“Yes, I'm fine now if you want to stop being a child and assist me." She made the statement sound like demand and reached out with her right hand.
"s**t. You're a Dreamer." Devin couldn't tear his eyes from her outstretched hand, the dark black veins weaving themselves up from her fingertips to her mid-forearm inching dangerously close to her elbow. "Do you remember how long?"
She shook her head. Deylay Dreaming occurred only in slayers. Often it was the result of a horrible event, one that would chill the blood of the slays veins and turn their hearts to stone. At the end of Deylay Dream, the slayer was stronger, and had new abilities, but was also uncontrollable, and dangerous. In the end, all Daylay Slayers had to be destroyed. For years they'd been trying to find a way to stop this process but so far nothing had worked.
Looking at her he couldn't believe that this beautiful girl comes be going through this. Not really thinking he whispered, “What did they do to you?”
She felt numb, the she in her chest had gone with every blow of the whip. oh dare she fall for a vampire couldn't she see how vile they were? Didn't she see this was her fault now that they had to punish her? Justin had been a made vampire and while he was able to control himself later, in the beginning, in the beginning he wasn't and many had suffered or so the court had told her. No one had been able to prove one way or another and his adopted family had despised her for it. "I'm so sorry." She cried out arching her back off the bed and allowing delirium to take over. "I'm so sorry I just don't know." She screamed this time and Devin knew he had to act now.
