I was shocked.
Today is my birthday?
I had not celebrated my birthday in five years. Most of my life had been spent just trying to survive, working my ass off to pay off debts, and searching for my stolen baby. I had forgotten what it felt like to have a day that was just for me.
Knowing the date should have made me happy, but all I could think about was Valerie.
The picture of her kissing Adrian earlier that day came back to my mind, making a tight feeling grow in my chest.
I looked up at Adrian, not sure what to say or how to react. Things between us were still unclear, and it felt like a dark cloud hanging above my head. I wanted to ask if he had said yes to Valerie’s request to go to the gala with her, but the words hung in my throat.
