Acknowledgments I began working on this book in earnest in 2018, shortly after I turned thirty-four. ‘In earnest’ because I thought about it for an entire year before I got to work. Thirty-three, I guess, was the year I stopped assuming my uneasy ambivalence toward motherhood would figure itself out. I drafted those initial pages during a week spent upstate with my late dog on a solo writing retreat that mainly consisted of me ‘finding my voice’ and taking advantage of my B&B’s extensive streaming options. In the end, I produced only twenty pages, and I’d be hard-pressed to find a single paragraph that made it into the book you hold now.
