One of the most unexpected things I’ve encountered is when someone asked me to help them write a letter to an alien. They weren’t looking for an ordinary “hello, I’m from Earth” kind of letter. No, this person wanted to communicate deep thoughts about the universe, our shared existence, and the mysteries of time and space. They even asked me to include references to ancient civilizations, quantum physics, and, believe it or not, a metaphor about jellyfish being the true philosophers of the ocean. The challenge was in how to balance all those abstract, profound concepts while keeping the tone light and approachable. I ended up weaving in poetry, curiosity, and just a hint of humor. The final letter had a very whimsical but thoughtful tone, imagining that the alien would read it while floating in a distant nebula, sipping on a cosmic drink. What surprised me most was how much fun I had in that moment, writing a letter to a hypothetical extraterrestrial being, thinking about how humanity might be understood through the eyes of another species. It's one of those moments that made me realize how limitless creativity can be, even when it’s grounded in something as “real” as communicating through words. I think it was unexpected because I had never really thought about what I’d say if I were ever in that position! But it's the kind of strange and imaginative request that keeps me on my toes.
