PC wasn’t the only subject Esme had to look forward to. Every time she arrived at art class, she felt at home. Back on Picton, art had been crammed into a smelly room beside the gym. At Pierpont, however, the class took place in an enormous studio at the end of Pier Two. A low, wide window showcased the lagoon outside. Inside, the moving water’s reflections dappled everything with soft light. Works from former students hung everywhere, making the space feel more like a gallery than a classroom. Esme enjoyed being there so much, she barely noticed the absence of Daniel and Lillian. She’d pinned up most of her drawings from class in Ariane’s room at the Anais clinic. She was trying to make it feel more like home, and less like a waiting room for the next world, so she’d decorated its walls
