Madison
Days later...
It's been a week and so far I haven't received any news about the job I applied for. Honestly, I've already lost hope... I could too! I, a poor person, who has worked various jobs my whole life, without ever having any real work experience, thinking that I could work at a renowned company like Campbell Technology is almost comical.
As I clean the cafeteria tables, I laugh alone with my own thoughts, I am truly a dreamer and I live in the world of the moon.
"Friend!", I'm taken out of my reverie by Chloe running towards me.
"Hey! Calm down, breathe." She stops in front of me panting and I help her control her breathing.
"We don't have time for that, your cell phone...", she holds up the device and I raise my eyebrows, not understanding anything.
“Chloe, you’re not talking about anything, you know that, right?”
She sighs before continuing.
"Call, it's from Campbell Technology, they want to talk to you." She hands me the cell phone and I notice her hands shaking, showing how nervous she is.
My eyes are wide open, I still can't believe they actually called me.
"Answer, girl!", Chloe shouts at me, as she was still thinking.
I put the cell phone to my ear.
"Hello." I try not to waver due to nervousness, but I fail miserably.
"Hello, Miss Stuart. I'm Zoe, director of human resources at Campbell Technology", I even think about responding, but I can't, "You applied for the secretary position, are you still interested?"
"Of course!", I respond louder than I planned. "I'm sorry, I really need this job."
The woman laughs.
"Okay, I understand," meanwhile, Chloe is looking at me, paying attention to every detail of the conversation, "Could you come to our company tomorrow at eight for an interview?"
"I can yes." I try to contain my enthusiasm, but the urge to scream is enormous.
"Okay! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow, see you later."
"Thanks." I thank you and end the call.
"What's up?" Chloe doesn't even wait for me to say.
I do a little suspense.
“Say it, damn it!”, she asks impatiently and I laugh.
"I did it, friend! I have an interview tomorrow!", I hold her hands and start jumping, she follows me. Lucky there's no one in the establishment yet.
"Oh, my God! I can't believe it! Goodbye poverty, goodbye miserable life." my friend says amusedly as we jump and I can't stop smiling.
"But don't get too excited, nothing is certain yet." my comment, full of optimism, not to say the opposite, makes Chloe snort.
"Stop being pessimistic, of course you'll make it." She remains thoughtful for a few moments. “We have to go out and celebrate.”
We stop jumping and I roll my eyes.
"Celebrate what, creature? It's just an interview."
"Exactly that, dear. You weren't even getting a single interview, so this is a big step, don't you think?", I place my hand on my chin and my gaze stays distant, analyzing the facts.
“On second thought, you’re right.”
"Of course I do, I'm perfect." She tosses her hair to the side in bragging, making me roll my eyes.
“Where will we go?”
"That little bar that recently opened and I'm dying to go." I widen my eyes and open my lips.
"Are you crazy? That place is only frequented by rich and powerful people, I refuse to do that." I stamp my foot on the floor like a tantruming child.
“You don’t refuse anything, we deserve to give ourselves this luxury once in our lives and yes, you will.”
When I was about to answer her, Hannah interrupts us.
"Recess is over, girls. Get back to work, there are customers coming." only then did we realize that we were almost screaming.
"Sorry, Hannah." I ask embarrassed.
"Remember you're not in an amusement park." Hannah's face is not good at all.
"I want to drag that woman's face across the asphalt, I swear." Chloe comments irritated, right after our boss walks away.
"Hold on a little longer, friend. We need this job until we get something better." She nods her head in agreement and takes a deep calming breath.
(...)
"Ready?" Chloe asks me, as she puts on her coat at the end of our shift.
“For what exactly?”
"Don't tell me you forgot our appointment...", she looks at me in disbelief.
"I didn't forget, though, I don't know if you remember, but I said I wouldn't go." I shrug.
"Ah, but yes you will! Even if I have to drag you by your hair, Madison."
"You wouldn't dare..." I challenge her.
"Test me and you'll know." We looked at each other firmly.
"You know I can't leave my grandmother alone for long." She raises her hand, interrupting me.
"Don't even start, Madison Stuart! Don't even start! It's always the same excuse, it's been a while since we went out, because you always put grandma in the middle of it to get away with it. But this time it won't work. Not at all!", Chloe really She's angry, and no wonder, she's right.
I let out a long sigh.
"Okay! You win." Chloe smiles victoriously.
Before we leave, I text Hailey, Grandma's nurse, to let her know I'll be home late in case she needs me. I then put my cell phone away and we called a taxi.
It didn't take us long to arrive at the bar.
As soon as we enter, I see several powerful men there, the eyes of most of them darken, seeing new meat on the piece. Only those who have worked in a bar or cafeteria know this.
Men... So predictable...
We looked for a table to sit at.
"This place is wonderful." I'm dazzled as I look around and take off my coat, leaving it on the back of the chair.
The bar is really perfect, in the center of it there is a huge square counter, surrounded by stools, some armchairs and sofas too, as well as tables and chairs, a real luxury.
"I knew you'd like it. Now let's get drunk." Having said that, she gestures, catching the waiter's attention, who soon comes to us.
"Good evening, ladies. What do you want?" he asks us gently, smiling sexy and hands us the menu.
I could swear he's trying to flirt, and it's certainly not me.
There are many drinks on the menu that, just thinking about them, makes me salivate.
"Friend, we'll have to sell a kidney or wash the dishes to pay for what we consume. Look at the price of all this..."
"Relax, I've already thought of everything." Chloe winks at me.
"So...?", the waiter asks.
"We'd like two martinis, please." My friend goes ahead to ask.
"OK!" He takes the order and leaves immediately, leaving us alone.
"Friend, what are you planning?", I narrow my eyes in her direction, because I know Chloe's cunning.
"Just relax and enjoy, the night is young." As soon as she is silent, I look around us and my gaze catches the most perfect image in this world, passing through the bar door.
A man dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, with a very mysterious look, enters the place, he is accompanied by a woman and, even so, I can't stop looking at him.
I feel uncomfortable about this. However, as if he knew he was being watched, he looks in my direction, making our eyes meet, a chill runs across my skin and my heart accelerates. The man soon looks away from mine and I could have sworn I saw a small smile.
"Madin?", I am awakened from my trance by the sound of Chloe's voice.
I blink repeatedly.
“What did you say?”
“Is everything okay?” she asks me with a frown.
I clear my throat.
"Yes, it is, yes." I force a smile, but she doesn't seem to be convinced of that, however, she doesn't insist on the subject.
Our drinks arrive and the waiter leaves them on the table.
While we drink and talk, I feel like I'm being watched all the time, which bothers me a lot. I take a brief glance in that direction and realize that, even though I'm in good company, he doesn't stop watching me.
My body starts to burn, a feeling of heat between my legs.
"Friend, I'm going to the bathroom, I'll be right back." I pour the rest of the drink down my throat, put the glass on the table and get up.
Chloe looks at me confused and just nods.
I go to the bathroom, go in and close the door. I rub water on my neck and breasts, trying to alleviate the heat.
"What's happening to me?", I stare at my reflection in the mirror "Come on, Madison... He's just a man like any other." I slap my left cheek twice.
I try to convince myself of this, when in fact I know I've never seen a man like this.
Finally, being a little calmer, I decide to return, because if I take too long, my friend will suspect that something is happening and I definitely don't want to have to explain further.
"Girlfriend, can we go? I'm not feeling very well." I ask him as soon as I reach the table we are at.
"But already? We haven't even really enjoyed it yet…"
"Sorry, I think tiredness got to me." I glance again, surreptitiously, towards the man, who always finds a way to observe me.
"Okay", she shrugs her shoulders, "You look strange, is something wrong?", Chloe analyzes me.
"Don't worry, friend. I'll be fine." once again, she doesn't seem to be convinced of this, but ends up accepting without retorting.
We put on our coats, paid the bill, which wasn't as expensive as I thought, and took a taxi. On the way, she told me that her plan was, if the bill got too expensive, we would find some rich guy, hit on him and then we wouldn't have to spend a single cent. I laughed when I heard her, because this girl doesn't have a shred of sense.
The car stops, I drop Chloe off first and wait for her to get out.
"Good luck, friend. As soon as you arrive, tell me everything." she says before closing the car door.
"Tell Hannah, okay?" I ask and she nods in agreement, then the driver starts, taking me to my address.
During the journey, my mind goes all the time to that intriguing man, luckily, it doesn't take me long to arrive at my destination. I pay the fare and head to the door.
When I enter, I notice that it is quite silent, I go straight to my room, I am exhausted, however, my mind does not relax.
I take a quick shower and put on a nightgown to sleep. I lie down, but all I can do is turn from side to side. I huff, irritated, for not being able to rest. I decide to get up and try to read a little.
(...)
The next day, I wake up startled by the noise of my cell phone, completely disoriented.
“What happened?” I look around and realize that I fell asleep sitting up while reading.
I pick up my cell phone and see that if I don't hurry, I will be late for the interview.
"s**t! Damn, Madison!" I scold myself for waking up late.
I run to the bathroom, do my hygiene quickly and put on the appropriate clothes for an interview, consisting of a black skirt, tight to the body, a white short-sleeved blouse, I also put on some pumps.
black, I comb my hair, leaving it loose, do basic makeup, without exaggeration and run to the company.
(...)
"Good morning, I have an interview scheduled for today." I talk to the woman at the reception desk.
"Madison, isn't it?", she asks smiling.
"Yes."
"Zoe is waiting for you." I nod slightly and she gets up, motioning for me to follow her.
I follow her and we stop in front of a door, she taps twice with her knuckles, hearing an enter then.
The receptionist opens the door, only putting her head in and I stand behind her, I can hear a female and a male voice, very deep, which sends a shiver down my spine, this must probably be the boss and I felt it out of nervousness.
A woman leaves the room, closing the door behind her and the receptionist returns to her role.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Stuart. I'm Zoe." We shake hands and I notice how kind she seems, as well as very beautiful and elegant.
"The pleasure is mine." I return the gesture.
"Let's go to my room." she guides me there.
During the interview, Zoe asks me a few questions and is apparently satisfied with my answers.
"I really liked you and your story, Miss Stuart. I really hope you're Mr. Campbell's chosen one." I'm glad to hear that.
"Thank you, I hope he likes my resume as much as you do. I mean, miss." I feel embarrassed and she laughs.
“You’re a great figure,” she comments with a laugh, “Don’t worry, we’ll be in touch.”
I get up to leave, and as I close the door and turn my heel, I bump into a wall of muscle.
"I'm sorry...", I ask embarrassed. Then I look up and can't believe what I'm seeing right in front of me. My lips part into a perfect "O" and my eyes go wide.
