Chapter 7: No Chance to Resist

1111 Words
Ewan Fu’s expression was a mix of emotions. After a long moment, he returned to his usual casual indifference. He turned to Ronan, who was being held back by Shen Chuan, and raised an eyebrow. "Old man, have you lost your mind?" Having calmed down slightly after his outburst, Ronan looked at Ewan in confusion. When Zoe had been sent home that afternoon, her wound wouldn’t stop bleeding, but no hospital dared to treat her. After asking several people who’d been present, Ronan learned that Briar and Zoe had caused a disturbance at Xiyuan Garden earlier that day, disturbing Ewan’s peace and soiling his property. That’s why Ewan had flown into a rage and forbidden hospitals in City A from treating Zoe. He’d swallowed his pride and begged the Fu family all night to get Ewan to relent. Wasn’t punishing Briar exactly what Ewan wanted? Ewan turned and sat down on a wooden chair nearby, his voice impatient. "Tell that Zoe to come here." "But Zoe can’t get out of bed after being beaten by this little beast—you saw it yourself, Master Fu..." Ronan rushed to defend Zoe. "I think you’re really getting old," Ewan sneered, cutting him off. "Your hearing must be failing badly." Ewan never repeated his words—he had no patience for it. Ronan’s face paled, but he conceded, turning to the butler and whispering, "Help Zoe over here." Ewan glanced at Briar, disheveled and covered in blood on the floor. After a moment of silence, he said to Shen Chuan, "Help her up." Shen Chuan knelt down, looking at Briar’s injuries, unsure where to touch her. Even he felt sorry for her—let alone his young master. He knew Ewan’s temper well. The calmer he seemed now, the bigger the storm that was coming. "This little beast she..." Ronan tried to stop him. "You begged me here repeatedly," Ewan interrupted, "what for?" It was clearly a rhetorical question. Ronan’s pride was being trampled on, but he didn’t dare to fight back. Gritting his teeth, he replied, "Zoe’s injuries require hospital treatment. Please show mercy and let..." "Why would I trouble a little girl?" Ewan smiled mockingly, asking another question. "This..." Ronan was even more confused. What was Ewan playing at? Everyone knew the answer to these questions. But Zoe’s life was in Ewan’s hands, so Ronan had no choice but to play along. "My two daughters were disrespectful at Xiyuan Garden," Ronan took a deep breath and replied. "So you’re saying both of them are at fault?" Ewan asked. Ronan was left tongue-tied again. But he couldn’t deny his own words, so he nodded reluctantly. "Yes, both are at fault." "Good," Ewan said with another smile. The smile made Ronan’s skin crawl. Ewan was notorious in social circles for playing by his own rules. Outside, the butler helped the delicate Zoe walk in. Zoe’s face was pale, her head wrapped in gauze that couldn’t hide the blood seeping through. She was wearing a thick sable fur coat, yet she still trembled as if freezing—like she might collapse at the slightest gust of wind. "Zoe has a fever," Ronan explained, pulling out a chair for her personally. Ewan watched them, saying nothing. When Ronan looked at him again, Ewan nodded toward Briar. "Where’s her chair? Or should I give her mine?" Ronan didn’t dare refuse. Holding back his anger, he told the butler to bring a chair for Briar too. When Shen Chuan helped Briar sit down, she almost collapsed immediately. Ewan looked at Briar, who was dressed in thin clothes, twisting the jade ring on his thumb casually. He said to Shen Chuan, "Take that fur coat off Zoe and give it to her." Shen Chuan raised an eyebrow in surprise, then walked over to Zoe as instructed. "Master Fu! Zoe has a high fever and severe injuries—how can she take off her coat?" Ronan exclaimed, stepping forward to stop Shen Chuan. "Am I blind?" Ewan asked a bodyguard beside him abruptly. "Tell me, who is more injured?" Bodyguard: "..." No one dared to speak. "If both are at fault," Ewan said, "then neither should wear warm clothes. Shen Chuan, take it off!" "Dad..." Zoe shrank back in fear as the tall Shen Chuan approached, tears streaming down her face like pearls. She’d never seen such a scene before. Ronan had always protected her—she was the Qin family’s little princess, spoiled wherever she went. No one except Briar had ever dared to hurt a hair on her head! Ronan had no choice but to take off his own coat and drape it over Briar’s shoulders. But as soon as the coat touched her, Briar threw it on the ground—she thought it was dirty. Ewan couldn’t help but laugh, saying to Shen Chuan, "Continue." Shen Chuan winked at two of his men at the door, and several men surrounded Zoe. Zoe looked to Ronan for help, but Ewan’s men blocked him, preventing him from interfering. "Sister..." Zoe cried, begging for mercy from Briar. Briar didn’t know what Ewan was up to, but for now, she had no intention of stopping him. She watched Zoe coldly, saying nothing. "It’s my fault!!!" Seeing no way out, Zoe screamed as she shrank back. "I’m sorry, it’s all my fault! I’ll never dare again!" "What are you sorry for?" Ewan asked calmly. "I shouldn’t have caused trouble at Xiyuan Garden and upset you, Uncle!" Zoe cried hysterically. "Uncle?" Ewan scoffed. "We’re not related. What right do you have to call me that?" Zoe froze for a few seconds, then burst into tears, not knowing how to respond. Ewan leaned back in his chair, tilting his chin slightly as he looked at her, disdain in his eyes. "I didn’t realize Nolan planned to marry two wives." "No! It’s not what you think between Brother Nolan and me!" Zoe denied frantically. She turned to Ronan. "Dad, wuwu... say something! I’m so scared..." Not only Zoe—Ronan didn’t know what to do either. The Qin family was a respected name in City A, and no one had ever dared to humiliate them like this. Only now did he realize that in the face of absolute power, they had no chance to resist! Desperate, he begged again, his voice low. "Master Fu, Zoe is still young and naive!" "Young?" Ewan sneered again. "She’s nineteen—don’t you think that’s old enough?" Ronan urged. Ewan didn’t reply, just smiled faintly as he looked at Ronan. In his life, he hated nothing more than being threatened—especially when someone was begging for a favor.
