Kai just stood there. Didn’t say a damn thing. Neither did I. We just sort of... froze, stuck in that weird in-between, the air thick enough to choke on.
My whole body was one big knot. Fists clenched so tight my nails dug half-moons into my palm, jaw locked so hard I thought my teeth might shatter. Breathing? Forget it. Felt like my lungs were on strike.
Kai’s eyes met mine, cold as a winter morning, but, s**t, there was something else there too. Pain? Regret? I don’t know. Blink and you’d miss it.
Then he just turned and walked out. Didn’t even slam the door, just a soft click. That tiny sound echoed in the empty room like a gunshot. I didn’t move, didn’t breathe. Heart pounding so loud I was sure the neighbors could hear.
I stared at the door, wishing he’d come back. Spoiler: he didn’t.
Selene was off to the side, tracking Kai as he disappeared. Her eyes, sharp, calculating, locked on him until he was gone for good.
She kept quiet, but man, she looked at me like she knew exactly what was going on. Like she could see right through me.
Then she came over. “See you later, baby.” Sweet as honey, voice dripping sugar.
She kissed my cheek. I swear my skin went ice-cold and my wolf snarled beneath it.
“You’re shaking,” she said, all fake concern. “You okay, Lucien?”
I just walked away. Didn’t even bother to answer.

I holed up in my office, staring at the same sheet of paper for what felt like a century.
Didn’t read a single word.
Kai’s scent lingered on it, maybe from his hands. That scent, soft, maddening made my head spin.
My wolf was clawing at me, burning hot under my skin. My claws slid out, just a touch, and I shoved them back down.
Hell no. Not here.
During the board meeting, I tried to play it cool. Didn’t work. My voice came out icy, my eyes probably dead.
Then boom Kai strolled past the glass wall. My breath caught. My eyes snapped to him.
Suddenly I felt pain, I looked down, my hand was bleeding. Glass shattered on the floor and blood pooling on the table.
Everyone stared.
“Excuse me.” I got the hell out.
In the restroom, I gripped the sink so hard it almost cracked, splashed cold water on my face until my skin went numb.
My reflection? Not even close to human. Gold eyes. Fangs. Pure monster.
“Control it,” I whispered, teeth gritted. “You’re the alpha. Get your s**t together.”
But who was I kidding? I’d lost control ages ago.

That night, I heard the front door creak open.
Perfume hit me first, Selene. Of course.
She waltzed in like she owned the place, black silk dress, bottle of wine in hand, not a care in the world.
I sat on the couch, silent, not even pretending to want her there.
She plopped down beside me, practically in my lap. “I brought red wine,” she said, all smiles. “You like red, right?”
Didn’t even answer.
She poured anyway.
“We need to set a date,” she said, voice soft, like she was breaking bad news. “The council’s waiting.”
I just nodded. Still nothing from my mouth.
She slid closer, fingers tracing up my arm. “Is it someone else?” she whispered.
Silence. Again.
Classic me, never say what matters.
Her smile dropped. She studied my face, like she was searching for a crack. “Something’s... off with you,” she said finally. “Something’s wrong.”
I stood up, went to the window. “I’m tired. Go home.”
She didn’t budge.
“You don’t wanna talk? Fine.” She finally got up, but before leaving, leaned in close, breath hot in my ear. “Your scent’s changed. I notice things like that.”
Then she was gone.
Left me there with a chest full of rocks and hands shaking all over again.

Next morning, I stepped into the building and stopped dead.
Two Elders in the lobby. One was a crusty old Beta, eyes sharp enough to cut glass.
“Alpha Lucien,” he said, voice like gravel. “We’re here to observe.”
I nodded, trying to sound normal. “Yeah. Sure.”
Took them to the private room.
They started drilling me. Why’d I miss training? Why were my reports late? Why was my scent different?
“Is your bond to Selene still intact?” they pressed.
I forced a smile. My skin felt like it was on fire.
“Yeah. Everything’s fine.”
They smelled the lie a mile away.
Glanced at each other.
“If you’re hiding something, Alpha,” one of them said, “it won’t stay hidden forever.”
And just like that, the walls felt like they were closing in.
It was stupid late. Everyone else had cleared out, but his scent still clung to the air like smoke after a fire. Kai. Yeah, he was still here somewhere. My nose caught his trail, dragging me down the stairs. Got heavier the closer I got to the basement, thick as honey.
My wolf? Losing its damn mind. Pacing, snarling, starving for him.
Server room door was just cracked, like an invitation or a trap. I shoved it open and slipped inside.
There he was Kai down on one knee, elbows deep in a mess of wires. He looked up so fast he nearly snapped his own neck, eyes wide, breath caught. Like I’d yanked the gravity out of the room.
I didn’t hesitate. Swung the door shut behind me and thumbed the lock. Click. He bolted upright, all nerves.
“Don’t.” His voice was shaky, paper-thin.
But I was already moving. Closing the space between us.
His chest was going wild, up-down-up-down like a trapped animal.
“Say it,” I whispered. Not much more than a threat.
“No.”
I slammed my palm against the wall next to his head. Hard enough to make the server hum.
“Say you feel it too,” I snarled, voice low and rough. “Say it!”
He stared at me like I was a goddamn wildfire. Fear in his eyes, sure, but something darker curled behind it. Hunger? Maybe. Maybe just madness.
“I do,” he choked out, voice cracking. “But I can’t. You’re hers.”
That hit me like a punch. My whole body shook, barely holding together.
Claws tore out of my fingers, fangs biting down on my own lip until I tasted iron.
“I can’t stop,” I growled. Couldn’t. Wouldn’t.
And then everything blurred.
Gold bled into my eyes. Muscles locked and my breathing went ragged.
Didn’t think. Didn’t care. Just moved. Grabbed him. Crushed our mouths together.
It was rough. Desperate. Felt like splitting apart and coming together at the same damn time.
Kai gasped, but he didn’t fight me off. He kissed back, hard and hungry, and the room just caught fire.
Then, click.
The lock turned. Door creaked open.
Harsh hallway light flashed over the server screens. I froze, mid-breath.
Kai just stared, lips swollen and red.
The door kept opening, slow and threatening.
Damn.
