The Bite Behind Closed Doors

1055 Words
Lucian POV I slammed the door so hard, the frame rattled. Probably too hard, but whatever. My heart was beating like I’d just sprinted a mile, every breath sharp and burning. Hands shaking so bad, I almost laughed. My brain? It was doing laps too, racing around in circles. Seriously, what the hell just happened? Why did I kiss him? What was that about? Kai was already leaning against the wall across the room, arms folded, looking way too casual. Unbothered. Like making out with me was just, you know, part of his Tuesday routine. Meanwhile, I was losing it. My insides were a mess, and my wolf was wide awake. “Why did you kiss me?” I blurted, still gasping. He barely moved, just lifted his chin. “You kissed me first,” he said, all calm and smug. “I didn’t mean to,” I muttered, running my hand through my hair. My heart hammered even faster, if that was possible. One eyebrow up. “You wanted to.” “No,” I snapped. Way too fast. Too defensive. Yeah, my body was basically screaming liar. My hands were twitchy, aching to touch him again. My chest felt like it might explode. And my wolf, oh, she was losing her damn mind. Growling, pacing, chanting the same thing over and over. Mine. Mine. Mine. I took a step back, but of course, Kai moved closer. Not fast, just deliberate. One step, then another, until he was right there. Close enough that his heat made my skin prickle. His eyes were calm, but his voice was weirdly gentle. “Your eyes turned gold,” he said. I looked away. “So what? Doesn’t mean anything.” “It means everything,” he whispered. I tried to step back again and yep, wall. Nowhere left to run. He was right in front of me, so close I could feel him breathing. “You felt it, didn’t you?” I shook my head. “No. I don’t feel anything for a guy. Not possible.” He leaned in, voice barely there. “Then why are you still here?” I had no answer. Not one that made sense. My mouth wouldn’t work, but my hands did. I grabbed him. Again. This time, I kissed him like it was the last air on earth. He gasped, fingers tangling in my shirt, and we crashed into the wall. Something fell, maybe a painting? Who cared. I shoved him toward the sofa, a fancy velvet thing, and he fell back, dragging me down with him. His jacket disappeared. My shirt buttons started popping, slow and loud. Clothes hit the floor, silent as a secret. The room felt boiling. Skin on skin everywhere. I kissed his chest. He grabbed my hair, rougher this time. He moaned my name, voice low and broken. “Lucian…” My teeth ached. My wolf wanted out. I tried to fight her, but she was winning. Then I bit him. Right on the shoulder, hard enough to taste blood. Kai gasped, but he didn’t stop me. Just pulled me in tighter. I jerked back, suddenly cold, breath coming in ragged bursts. Sweat everywhere. My head felt like static. Kai was sitting on the sofa’s arm, putting his pants back on, quiet as a ghost. I saw the mark the bite. My mark. “What… what did I do?” I whispered. He looked at me, voice soft, almost kind. “Ask your wolf.” “This isn’t me,” I snapped. “I don’t do this.” He just shrugged. “Then who are you?” I stood up way too fast. “This was a mistake.” Kai didn’t even flinch. “Maybe.” “Get out,” I growled, voice rough. He stared at me for a second, then stood, walked to the door. No drama. No yelling. Didn’t even look back. Just a quiet click, and he was gone. I slid down the wall, hit the floor hard. Now I was freezing. Empty. What the hell did I just do? I yanked on a clean shirt, didn’t even care if it was backward. Washed my face, splashed water all over. Didn’t help. His scent lingered, his touch burned my skin. I could still taste him. Still hear the noises we made. Still wanted more. And then Knock. Before I said anything, the door swung open. Selene breezed in, carrying two glasses of wine, dress flawless, face stone cold. She narrowed her eyes at me. “There you are. You stopped answering your phone.” I shrugged. “Needed air. Got tired.” She frowned. “In a guest room?” I said nothing, just stared at the carpet. She stepped closer, sniffed the air, literally, like a bloodhound. “You smell… weird.” “It’s the wine,” I lied, way too fast. “Spilled some.” She wasn’t buying it. One eyebrow up. “Right.” She set the wine on the table, all slow and deliberate. “Your father wants a photo. Smile. Pretend you’re happy.” I nodded. Tight, fake. She glanced at me again. “Your hair’s a mess.” Didn’t bother answering. She spun on her heel and left without another word. I let out a breath I didn’t even know I’d been holding. The house was dead quiet now. Party over, lights off, nothing but shadows. I headed to the bathroom, shut the door, stared at myself in the mirror. Turned the tap. Splash, cold water in my face. Breathe and Look up. My eyes, glowing gold. Not human. Wolf. “No.” Yeah, my wolf was wide awake now. Zero chance of shoving him back in the shadows. He was out there, loud as hell. And then, clear as day inside my head, I heard him: “You just bit your true mate.” My hands grabbed the sink, cold marble, biting into my skin. I couldn’t stop shaking. God, I wanted to pretend it didn’t happen. Just wipe it clean from my head. No dice. Kai’s scent still clung to me. Blood, his blood, still lingered on my tongue. The mark? Still burning like a brand. So, yeah, I knew. No more running from it. And damn, it terrified me. Everything just flipped upside down.
