Chapter Eight: Partners

1292 Words
Mira had spent the entire weekend convincing herself that she needed to stop thinking about Ethan. It wasn't working. Every answer he gave only created more questions. He knew Amara. He admitted it. But he insisted he wasn't the Stranger. And somehow, the Stranger knew every conversation they had. It made no sense. By Monday morning, Mira had a headache before her first class had even started. She adjusted the strap of her bag as she walked toward the Faculty of Arts. The morning breeze carried the smell of fresh paint from the studios. Students filled the courtyard, some carrying sketchbooks, others balancing large canvases under their arms while complaining about unfinished assignments. "Mira!" Tessa jogged toward her with two cups of coffee. "You look like you didn't sleep." "I didn't." Tessa handed her one of the cups. "What happened this time?" "Nothing." "You know," Tessa said, "one day I'm going to believe you when you say 'nothing.'" Mira smiled faintly. "Today isn't that day." "No." The two friends laughed softly before walking into the studio together. The Art studio was already buzzing with conversations. Half-finished paintings rested against the walls. Clay sculptures covered one corner of the room. Sunlight poured through the large windows, making tiny specks of dust dance in the air. Professor Adeyemi entered with a folder tucked beneath his arm. The room became quiet. "I've marked your individual projects," he announced. "Now it's time for something different." A few students groaned dramatically. He chuckled. "This project will be done in pairs." The class immediately became louder. "Sir, can we choose our partners?" someone asked. "No." More complaints followed. Professor Adeyemi ignored them and began reading from the list. Names echoed through the room. Students celebrated when they were paired with friends. Others sighed in disappointment. Then... "Mira Williams." She looked up. "Ethan Cole." Silence. Just for a second. Tessa slowly turned toward Mira with a grin. "Oh..." "No," Mira whispered. "Oh, yes." Mira dropped her face into her hands. "This can't be happening." Across the room, Ethan simply nodded once before writing something in his notebook. He didn't look excited. He didn't look annoyed. He looked... calm. Too calm. After the lecturer finished reading the names, he placed a wooden box on the front table. "For this project, each pair will create one artwork." Students leaned forward. "The theme is simple." He smiled. "A Story Without Words." The room filled with whispers. "You may use paint, charcoal, pencil, mixed media... whatever best tells your story." He paused. "But remember..." He looked around the room. "If people need an explanation to understand your artwork, then you've failed." When class ended, students immediately gathered around their partners. Ideas flew across the room. Mira stayed where she was, pretending to arrange her pencils. She hoped Ethan would leave. He didn't. A shadow fell across her desk. "We should probably discuss the project." She looked up. Ethan stood there with his sketchbook tucked under his arm. "I suppose." "There are too many people here." "There usually are." He glanced toward the courtyard. "Want to walk?" Mira hesitated. Every sensible part of her wanted to refuse. But another part... The curious part... Wanted answers. "Fine." They walked out of the studio together. Neither of them spoke at first. Students passed by laughing loudly. Someone was playing music near the cafeteria. For a while, the silence between them wasn't uncomfortable. It was simply there. Finally, Ethan spoke. "So..." "So?" "What kind of artist are you?" Mira frowned. "What does that mean?" "Everyone has something they enjoy drawing." She thought about it. "People." "Why?" She looked down at the sketchbook she was holding. "I think faces tell stories." Ethan nodded. "They do." "What about you?" He smiled faintly. "Old buildings." She blinked. "Buildings?" "They've survived things." Mira looked at him for a moment. "That's a strange answer." "So I've been told." She almost smiled. Almost. They stopped beneath a large tree overlooking the school garden. Students sat nearby painting flowers and trees for another assignment. Ethan placed his sketchbook on the bench. "I was thinking," he said. "Dangerous." He laughed quietly. "I deserve that." "It was a joke." "I know." For a brief second... Everything felt normal. "So," Ethan continued, "what if our artwork isn't about one person?" Mira looked interested despite herself. "What do you mean?" "What if it's about two strangers?" Her heart skipped. She quickly looked away before he noticed. "Two strangers?" "Who keep crossing paths." Mira swallowed. "That's... interesting." "But?" "It sounds unfinished." "Exactly." He looked toward the students painting nearby. "Some stories aren't supposed to be finished." His words lingered in the air between them. Mira wondered if he realized how often he spoke in riddles. Or if he simply couldn't help it. As they discussed different ideas, a football rolled across the grass. It hit the bench with a dull thud before falling at Mira's feet. A small boy from the secondary school nearby came running toward them. "I'm sorry!" Mira picked up the ball and smiled. "It's okay." She threw it back. The boy waved happily before running away. When she turned back... Ethan was watching her. "What?" He shook his head. "Nothing." "No." She folded her arms. "You were looking at me." "You smiled." "So?" "I don't think I've seen you smile properly before." Her cheeks warmed. "I smile." "Not often." "You've known me for less than a week." "True." "And yet..." He looked thoughtful. "...you smile differently when you forget people are watching." Mira didn't know what to say. Instead, she opened her sketchbook. "We should work." He nodded. "You're right." For the next hour, they sketched rough ideas. Sometimes they argued. Sometimes they agreed. Once, their pencils reached for the same eraser. Both of them pulled their hands back at the same time. "Sorry," Ethan said. "It's fine." A small silence followed. Neither of them mentioned it. By late afternoon, dark clouds gathered above the campus. "I think it's going to rain," Mira said. Almost immediately... Thunder echoed across the sky. Students hurried to pack their things. "We should go," Ethan said. The first drops began falling before they reached the pathway. Within seconds, the rain became heavy. Students laughed as they ran for shelter. Mira and Ethan found themselves standing beneath the roof outside the Art building. The rain poured so heavily they could barely see across the courtyard. "I guess we're stuck," Ethan said. "For now." They stood quietly watching the rain. It reminded Mira of the rainy afternoons she and Amara used to spend together. They would race home, completely soaked, while laughing at nothing. The memory made her chest ache. "You miss her." Mira looked at Ethan sharply. "What?" "Amara." He didn't look at her. He kept watching the rain. "I can tell." Mira felt tears threatening to rise. "I think about her every day." "I know." This time... She didn't ask how he knew. She wasn't sure she wanted the answer anymore. After nearly twenty minutes, the rain became lighter. Students slowly began leaving. Ethan adjusted his backpack. "I'll walk you to the bus stop." "You don't have to." "I know." She looked at him for a moment before nodding. The walk was quiet. Comfortably quiet. When they reached the gate, Mira stopped. "Thank you." "For what?" "For today." A small smile appeared on Ethan's face. "I'll see you tomorrow, partner." Partner. The word sounded less awkward now. As Mira boarded her bus, she looked back through the window. Ethan was still standing near the gate. Hands in his pockets. Watching the bus pull away. For the first time since everything began... Mira wasn't thinking about the Stranger. She was thinking about Ethan. And somehow... That frightened her even more.
