Chapter Six: Unwilling Partners

1261 Words
Noah's POV The second Mrs Reid dismissed the class, Kael was out of his seat and an inner voice whispered that he was escaping. Like the thought of partnering with me was some kind of contagious disease. To bad I very well felt the same way. “Hey!" I rose up and went after him but he ignored me. "Kael!” the arrogant i***t kept moving, his one stride was equivalent to two of mine, making it harder to catch up. “Kael Draven!" He stopped abruptly, making me hit the brakes with my heel to avoid crashing into him as he turned slowly. His dark messy hair fell towards his face and I noticed the one lensed framed glasses handing loosely on the bridge of his nose, making his green eyes more evident. He somehow managed to look annoyed by my existence without saying a single word. It was honestly impressive. I crossed my arms and his brow lifted. “look, I'll forgive you.” "..." "..." His face remained completely blank. "I'll forgive you," I repeated. "For what?" He asked. My eye twitched. "For throwing me into a pool." "That?" I could almost scoff. "Yes, that." "Well that's very generous of you." You know, I hated him. Genuinely. "Anyway," I continued, "we have an assignment and I can't afford to mess this up because of your oversized ego, I would kill for my grades..… Soo I was thinking we should work on how to split up the work now so we don't have to live in each other presence for to long." His expression immediately flattened again. “There it is." He snorted. I blinked. “There what is?” He crossed his arms against his chest, making his biceps more visible than ever. Focus Noah. “The part where you become effortlessly annoying.” I scoffed. “Funny. I was just about to say the same thing.” He turned around, clearly intending to leave but I wasn't done. "Seriously?" “Tsk, can you not be a leach? If I remember clearly, you said to stay out of your business." I crossed my arms as well. " You think I want this?” He only rolled his eyes and kept on walking away from me. I stared at the back of his head and I could feel irritation build up. “I know why you won't do this" I followed him, knowing well enough I was starting to gain the attention of others though he kept walking. “I mean, it makes sense." Still walking. "Boys like you usually don't do their own work anyway" He stopped abruptly but didn't turn around. "Rich alpha boys." I shrugged. "They just call Daddy whenever something gets difficult." I could tell he scoffed. "Academic support." I started to name lazily. "Financial support, Daddy's influence." He finally turned to me. "I mean honestly," I continued. "If I had a powerful father solving all my problems, I'd probably avoid assignments too." The expression on his face would've scared most people but unfit for him I'd spent five years dating Jason Sullivan. I was immune to Alpha nonsense. " Are you done” He asked. I rolled my eyes. "No.” His eye twitched. "Fine. We'll do the assignment.” He briefly glanced around. "Just to get you to shut up." Whatever. "I have some free time before practice." He started walking again. "Cafeteria." I hurried after him with a victorious smile still playing on my lips. "See? Was that so difficult?" The cafeteria looked more like a luxury hotel than a school dining hall. Student's if different rank crowded every table that matched their locker and then conversations echoed through the room. The second Kael entered, phone appeared everywhere and girls sat straighter. The whole scenery made me want to puke. Meanwhile Kael continued walking with one hand in his pocket like this was completely normal. We both got into an elevator. Yes. There was a freaking elevator at the end of the regular cafeteria and it took us up to a much bigger one. A separate section with emerald tables and classic gold chairs but then it was completely empty. “Where is everybody?" “Out. None of us likes to eat here." He replied as he pulled out a chair and sat. I could almost scoff. “But this place was created for you guys and you guys don't eat in it." Rich people were weird. "Are you going to sit down and get this over and done with or you're going to keep yapping about who should and shouldn't be here?” I rolled my eyes but sat across him anyways and then minutes later, I was doing all the talking. "During the class I started researching wolf biographies." He leaned back. "I found records from higher wolves dating back decades." A yawn but I had to focus and ignore him even if the irony of it states that I couldn't ignore him. "Their sensory changes were documented after discovering their wolves." Another yawn which made my eye twitch and i set my notebook down. “Are you even listening?" "What makes you think I'm not.” " You literally just yawned.” "I can multitask.” he shrugged. I groaned dramatically and returned to my notes. "Enhanced hearing usually develops first and then smell..” "Mm." He nodded in pretence. “Then instincts which halter the brain…” "Mm." He mumbled again. I slammed the notebook shut. " You know what, I think I need water.” I shot him a glare as I rose up from where I sat but Immediately regretting it as a waiter appeared from no where, carrying a tray of a juice glass. We both stepped in the same direction, directly into each other's path. “Oh.. The tray tilted and my eyes widened immediately as the glass slid. Everything happened at once, the waiter stumbled and the tray tipped, but before I could react, a hand wrapped around my waist. Strong and fast. Pulling me against a hard rock chest while the tray crashed and juice flew everywhere. Cold liquid splashed across his shirt and then on the floor. It was just everywhere except on me. The waiter looked horrified but my attention was very aware of two things. One. Kael's arm, still around my waist. Two. We were standing far too close to each other. My pulse quickened and that same strange feeling from the pool returned like I was reliving the moment. For a moment neither of us moved and neither of us spoke while his green eyes locked onto mine. The tensioner in the room shifted enough for my stomach to flip but then I blinked back, returning to reality. I tugged on his shirt and pulled myself up as I stepped far back. My hands instinctively smoothing imaginary wrinkles from my clothes. I was never nervous, sure I always felt left out due to my father and sisters death but I had learnt to keep an armored skin. But with Kael, it felt like I forgot to armour certain feelings I never knew existed. “Thanks" I mumbled. " Try to watch where you're going.” He hissed like the jerk he was. “It wasn't my fault, he literally walked into me." “you were the one so eager to drink water." I could only roll my eyes, I wasn't about to argue with someone who just saved you. “And you got all messed up for it."
