Chapter 8
I’m carried all the way into the house and up the steps. I start wiggling to get out of Devon’s embrace as we approach the room I’m staying in. He let’s me down but I can tell he doesn’t want to. I open the door and take a step in the room. Shane and Devon are standing in the hall looking at me. I can tell they want to say something, they are shuffling from one foot to the other. I stand there waiting for them to say what they want to. Tension is filling the air, after some minutes Shane finally breaks the silence.
“ You were very brave tonight and held yourself well. You don’t have to worry about anything here, you're protected. There are guys on guard all night around the house and we are just down the hall if you need anything. Sleep well little one.” He leans down and gives me a kiss on the forehead. Devon does the same bidding me good night as well. I wait for them to turn and walk down the hall before shutting the door.
I walk over to the window facing the back of the house leaving the room in darkness. I see some guards close to the house moving in a sweeping pattern. Out towards the barn some lady’s are cleaning the gathering and directing who wasn’t able to escape in time. Behind the barn is another sweeping pattern of guards. They are all wearing dark blue or black. My eyes follow them for a bit before scanning the fields beyond.
I move to the other window at the side of the house. I observe the same movement, it almost looks like a dance. I look out beyond and see the outline of trees in the dark. I study them for a while, waiting to see any movement or anything out of the ordinary. I’m on edge and wish I was back at the garage to calm my nerves working on the bike. I don’t know this place and there’s a lot more people around. I am tired and anxious all at the same time. My heart wants to believe the boys that I’m safe but my head has doubts.
I turn from the window and get my bag I stashed. I don’t have enough locks for the door and all the windows. I look at the closet, it’s big enough for me but only one way in and out. I’ll be trapped if Blaine comes and will be blown up as well if my lock is tripped. Letting out a sigh, I pull out my 9mm and check it. Making sure it’s loaded and ready to go. I lay down on the bed, trying to relax my brain. It’s working over time, going through everything from today. Who was that guy that grabbed my ass?? After meeting the boys, I know he wasn’t one of them. Did he work for Blaine? Is he a spy or just a pervert passing through?
Then my mind goes to the meeting. Yes Blaine is dangerous and yes I do need help but can I put all these people in danger? Is that fair of me to even ask or expect it? No I did not say the words but I know my actions have. Everything is weighing heavy on my mind, feeling like I need to do something. I open my door slowly making sure it doesn’t squeak, I’m going on my own tour of the house. Moving diligently through the house I check every door I come across. I found the linen closet, bathroom and a big bedroom. It has a king size bed in the middle of the room, a tall dresser and a low long one with a mirror on top of it. On the other side by a window is a vanity with bottles of perfume, hair brush, lipstick and things to like. This is their parents room, so I backed out and shut the door. I find the boys room and hear their low breathing or light snoring.
I slowly walk to the stairs knowing old houses such as this one the floors and stairs have creaks in them. Testing every step I make, I stand at the bottom of the stairs letting my eyes adjust to the moon light filtering through the curtains. The living room has a long couch, an arm chair and a smaller couch around the big fireplace. Small tables here and there, I move to the dining room and see a door in the wall under the steps. I’m gonna come back to that on the way back up. The dining room has a china cupboard, a big table with chairs around it and a wet bar.
I move down a hall and open a door to a butler's closet with dishes, glasses and silverware. I found a coat closet on the way to the kitchen. Walking around the island I see a door at the end of the counter. It open’s to a pantry. I walk in to see if there is anything I want to snack on when I hear footsteps. Not knowing who it is I pull the door closed leaving it cracked open so I can peek out.
I hear a cabinet open clinking of ice and water running, someone getting a glass of water? The footsteps started to retreat when yelling was heard outside. Stomps came from above me and cursing from the kitchen. The back door slammed open and I heard Josh’s voice.
Josh- “ There’s a breach on the south side, one man down still breathing, Where’s Sky?” The answering voice told me who was in the kitchen.
Shane- “ Up stairs. Did anyone see who it was, how many and where they’re at?”
Heavy footsteps stop in the kitchen letting me know Devon has arrived.
Josh- “ Only able to see ten so far. I sent more men to secure and capture anyone if able to but not sure how many more are in the trees. The inner circle is posted at every door and window.”
Devon- “ Is everyone geared up?”
I didn't hear an answer but most likely there was a nod. I’m glad I brought my gun with me. I have to get my bag, I can’t leave that behind and tip off Blaine to what I have. I crept out of the pantry and hit a creek on the floor. All three of them swing to me with guns drawn.
Josh- “ Dam it girl!! You gave me a heart attack.”
Devon- “ I thought you were in your room?”
Sky- “ No I couldn’t sleep but I have to get my bag from there.”
Shane was about to protest when more yelling and sounds of fighting came from the back. Devon and Josh ran out the back door and Shane and I ran up stairs. I’m in front of Shane, as we entered the living room the front windows exploded. There was an explosion in the front yard. We crouched down waiting to see if anyone was gonna enter. After a minute we made a run for the steps, making it to my room. I grab my bag.
I stop Shane from turning on the light. “ They will see where we are if you do that. I don’t need it.” There was another explosion, now I’m pissed. Men are screaming in pain and giving orders. I look out the side window after gearing up in my tac vest, side holster, med kit, long blades on my back, short blades in my vest and a few back up guns. Shane is just staring at me. I see more people in the woods, they're not trying to conceal themselves any more we know they are here.
“ There are about fifty more in the trees. Do you have any weapons?” I ask Shane. He nods, takes my hand and leads me to his room after clearing the hallway. “ I’m so sorry,” I tell him. He locks the door, goes to his closet. “ There is nothing to be sorry about, we are prepared, don't worry.” I shake my head “ No this is all my fault but I’ll make it right. We have to cut them off before getting to the house, I wish I had my long gun” I mumbled the last.
After Shane grabbed his guns and put on a vest we moved out of the room. Making it down stairs I know there are men fighting in the front, back and south side. We see no one fighting on the north side. Shane wants to go out those windows but I stop him. Remembering my training I know that is a tactic to flush someone out. Make it seem the safest way when it’s not.
I grab his arm to stop him and shake my head no with my finger against my lips telling him to stay quiet. I don’t know what kind of training he has, if any at all. He looks at me confused but nods anyway. I point to the front, we’re going out fighting. He knows what I mean and get’s a concerned look in his eye. I hold his eye with confidence and nod. He takes a deep breath, points to his back telling me to stay behind him. Turning with a gun in both hands and one in mine we go to the blown out windows low to the ground. If no one sees us yet they will soon.
Fighting looks to be slowing down only because the next wave didn’t hit yet.
We get to the corner of the house, plotting our next move. The intruders are wearing light gray jackets and are easy to pick out from our side. Running across the field to the tree line Shane starts shooting anyone in our way. I shoot anyone coming from the sides and check our back. As I spin to our back I see some men in dark clothes following more join as we cross over the field.
Shane and I reach the tree line, I look back we have about six men behind us. I see a tall man pulling up the rear and know it fis Devon. Movement behind him catches my eye in light gray, he doesn’t see him. I line up my shot and shoot behind him. Devon hits the ground then looks behind him to see the one I shot fall. He joins us at the tree line. “ Dam girl” he hissed. “ I thought you were gonna shoot me. Nice shot by the way.” I gave him a crooked smile and a wink.
Sky- “ we have to head them off. I saw another wave coming, approximately fifty men or so. Does anyone know who they are?”
Devon- “ That’s for later. Where did you see them coming in?”
Sky- “ about twenty yards ahead and stretching about five yards across.”
Nodding he directs the men where to go, spreading out and moving silently. The three of us move through the trees and position for a side attack. I hear a bird call, the twins look at each other then at me. “ You ready?” Shane whispers, I nod and ready myself. He calls back and we wait for the enemy to come to us.
We let the first ten or so men pass then launch our attack. We catch them by surprise but they fight back. We’re hiding behind trees shooting as many as we can before they take cover. Shane is not far to my right and Devon not far from my left. I have one advantage over them and that’s being small. I can crouch low and move in the brush.
Shane and Devon are taking most of the attention of some men behind trees, we can’t get a good shot on them from our positions. So I holster my gun and move forward in the brush. I make my way behind them, I don’t want to use my gun and give myself away so I pull a short blade. I have training on how to kill if necessary but always avoided it in the past. Being on the run for my life has changed me, I just don’t know if it is a good change or bad. All I know right now is it’s either them or me and if they are here to take me back to Blaine then I’d rather die. I come up behind a guy who is reloading his gun. I take a deep breath and slit his throat while covering his mouth. I lower him to the ground, covering his body with leaves.
I work my way to the next one but he’s not as easy. He calls out to the guy I already took care of, knowing something not right with no answer back. He turns to me right as I get close. He throws a punch that lands on the side of my face. I fly back hitting the ground hard, I lose my short blade. He stands over me with a sneer on his face. “ Let’s see how tough you are” he says to me as he reaches down to me, grabbing my vest. Hoisting me up to his face “Let’s have a taste to see if you're worth all this trouble”. He tries to kiss me, I grab his face with one hand and squeeze as I take hold of my other blade with the other. He’s fighting me trying to kiss me as I stab him in the stomach. He drops me and screams.
More men come running and I dive for the brush. They know I’m in there and are looking for me. That gives Shane, Devon and their men time to move in and take them out. I stay hidden moving every so often away from the fighting. When things grow quiet I am still in the brush. I don’t come out until I hear Shane call my name. They’re looking all around for me when I pop up to their side about ten yards away.
I see Josh’s face light up with a smile when he sees me. “ We should start calling you rabbit instead of fairy.” I let out a giggle and shake my head. Shane and Devon come to my side. “ The men are starting to clean up now and sweeping the area to make sure none are left.” Josh reports as we head to the house. The twins take each of my hands and walk in silence.
Sky- “ What’s the statues of the men?”
Josh- “ 10 injured, 3 on the way to hospital, no fatalities. Doc is on the way as well.”
Sky- “ How many captured?”
Josh looks at the boy’s before answering. They give a nod and he takes a deep breath. “ 6 captured and chained in the cells.” My eyebrow picked up on that.
Shane- “ I told you we have enemies too. We have some cells in the barn, for talks.”
Sky- “ You soften them up while I shower then I will finish them.”
