"-no idea what the future holds for me," Sophie murmured softly, knocking him out of his lingering thoughts.
"You know exactly what the future holds for you, Sophie." Julian commented, taking another sip of wine, still holding her hand across the table. "Bearing my child. Which reminds me-" He paused and put his drink down, reaching into his jacket pocket, pulling out folded papers."- Before we proceed with the insemination, I need you to sign these."
He handed them over to her as her face crinkled with confusion. She set her glass of orange juice down and took the papers off him, pulling her hand from his, already missing the shivers of tingles that had been pulsing through her palm from the second he touched her.
Briefly reading through the papers, she bit her lip.
"What?" Julian said, matter-of-factly. As though he had handed her a tissue and not documents that signed over all her rights to the baby they would conceive.
"It says here, I won't have any contact with the baby once it's born.." Sophie trailed off, thinking quickly.
Oh come on, Sophie! What did you expect? That you and Julian would share a baby he was paying you to have? Her conscience screamed at her. Silly girl!
Sophie was nothing more than a baby incubator for him. Obviously, until now, she hadn't really thought about the little life they were creating tomorrow.
All of Sophie's thoughts based around her family and how happy they would be from being bailed out of almost bankruptcy.
"Of course, I assumed contact would be difficult for you. After all, the baby will be living on Isle Lujo, and you will be living in England with your family." Julian replied, once again. As though they were discussing the weather.
Sophie shook her head, "I'm sorry, Julian, but I don't think I've thought this through..."
Don't back out on me now, Sophie." Julian warned, a small glint of anger in his eyes. He was like a rubber band, stretching to being nice and then snapping back in to a cool, cold Julian that everyone knew and feared.
Sophie's mouth went dry and the tears threatened to overflow. The thought of not being with this baby that didn't even exist yet, made her gut wrench and her soul burn. "I want to see my baby."
"That wasn't in the agreement." Julian bit out. "This baby needs a stable life, not fleeting from one country to the other, constantly between parents."
"This baby will need a mother." Sophie bit back, noticing the people around the restaurant began to stare at them.
Julian growled low in his throat, "And my son will have a mother when I decide to marry."
A tear dropped down Sophie's cheek, and she noticed Julian focus on it run down her cheek, to the base of her throat.
And then Sophie looked at this man and she realized that it wasn't too late to back out, back out of everything.
If need be, she would sell more glamour shoots to the lads magazine to keep the business going.
And on that thought, Sophie's soul hardened and gave her the strength to lean forward and look Julian Cruz in the eyes and growl her own words, "I won't be your baby incubator, Julian. I want an active part in my child's life. I want my baby!"
Sophie flung the papers back at Julian and shoved her chair back, storming out of the restaurant without a backward glance.
Until Julian's firm palm wrapped around her arm and dragged her around to face him.
"You can't back out, Sophie!"
Sophie raged, "I already have backed out!"
"Please, Sophoe!" Julian's voive was an inch from begiing. "You don't know what this will do to me!"
Sophie looked him deep in his brown eyes and asked the question that burned through her, "Why do you even want a baby anyway, Julian? You don't fool me as the kind that will get up every few hours to see to a screaming baby, or change nappies- or even hold a baby for that matter!"
Julian looked away from her, fighting with his inner self to tell her or not to tell her.
Eventually his brown eyes locked on her green ones, holding them hostage. "My mother is sick."
Sophie knew to her very bone marrow that he was telling her the truth, for Julian Cruz could never look so cut up.
"She's dying, Sophie. And her only wish before the cancer takes her life is to hold her first grand child. I will give her that, Sophie." Julian's voice turned hoarse and uncontrolled. This was the first time Sophie ever heard this man speak so.... humanly.
"Oh, Julian.." Sophie's heart wrenched for him.
"I need this baby, Sophie." He whispered, stroking her hair behind her ear. "I need it as soon as I possibly can so that my mother can die a happy woman with her dying wish granted."
"I will need my baby, too." Sophie whispered, "to not see it... It will kill me, Julian. Knowing that I gave a part of myself up. That I'd miss out on all those amazing memories and never be able to get them back."
Julian sighed, "It was wrong of me to assume you wouldn't care, Sophie. Don't back out on me now, please."
Sophie couldn't blink back the tears anymore, and so she let them flow. "I can't now have my baby with me, Julian."
"What if I offered you a different proposal?"
"I'm not giving my child up, Julian." Sophie replied, her voice firm.
"You won't have to." Julian assured, holding on to her arm for dear life. "Live on Isle Lujo with us. I'll pay your family what you owe, but you can be free of them as well, Sophie. I swear the baby will be within walking distance and you can come and visit any time you like."
"And the baby can also sleep at mine on weekends." Sophie added, the glint in her eyes promising she won't back down easily.
"Fine," Julian succumbed, "but he will only stay at yours once my mother is no longer alive. Until she passes, we both agree she gets to spend however much time she likes with the child- whenever she likes."
"Agreed, but the child will know I'm its mother and I will have my say in things as well. I refuse to be a ghost in my child's life."
"Agreed, we will decide together what is best for our child."
"Fine." Sophie agreed, far happier. "Draw the contract up stating wha we've just discussed and I'll sign."
"Goood." Julian agreed, nodding. His composure returned like the snap of a rubber band once again.
He was back to Mr. Cool.
"I won't have none of your sperm assaulting my eggs until I've seen that contract, and I'm happy with it," Sophie added, turning to hail a taxi.
Julian's lips curved into a crooked smile as he took in the sway of her hips, sexily shaped by a pair of jeggings that had slices down the sides of mouth-watering thighs, down the curves of her shapely legs, and ended with a pair of sexy suede black ankle boots. She wore a loose plum vest top that outlined the gorgeous shape of her hour-glass figure, her breasts nestled deliciously in the curve of the vest top, hinting just enough to let a man know that those babies were not pancakes.
Julian's pulse quickened.
No! He shouldn't have feelings for this woman! He refused to have feelings for this woman!
"Good night, Señor Cruz." Sophie called over her shoulder as she got into the taxi.
"Call me when you're home." Julian called back, pulling his phone out to tell his driver to pull the car around. "Buenas noches, Kitten."
Good night, Kitten.
