Anastasia’s POV
“Is this why you offered me the job?” I slammed the door open to Mr Antonio’s office.
“Miss Cabrera, have you lost your mind?” Antonio jumped out of his seat, storming towards me.
“You can’t just barge into my office like you own the place.” He warned, but I didn’t care.
I was looking for Matteo.
“Anastasia you are walking on thin ice, if Mr Santoro found you making a ruckus like this. You’d….”
“She’d regret it.” His deep voice ran shivers down my spine. I looked to my right and he was standing by a huge mahogany door linking Antonio's office with his.
“Mr Santoro, please forgive me. She burst in here without permission and….” Matteo shut him up with a raised palm and kept a hard gaze on me.
My blood boiled with the mere thought of him just looking at me.
“Follow me.” He said before walking back into his office.
I followed his instructions and shut the door behind me.
“You really have a pair, Miss Cabrera. You ignored my offer yesterday and decided to cause a nuisance in my office?” He c****d a brow, sipping his black coffee.
“I wouldn’t need to cause a scene if my reason for being here wasn’t so manipulative.” I flared up, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Really?” He leaned on his elbow with a wide smile. “Did we drag you against your will to our office?”
I remained silent.
“Did anyone threaten you to take up our offer?” He asked with a sickeningly sweet smile.
I couldn’t speak because he wasn’t wrong.
Nobody forced me to come here, I took up the first job that dropped in my lap because I wanted to show Sergio that I was better off without him.
“I quit,” I said before turning towards the door.
“No one else can hire you but me.” He said, making me freeze seconds before grabbing the doorknob.
“You signed a contract, Miss Cabrera. You agreed to work with us for a minimum of twelve months, if otherwise broken you’ll be sued for a sum of a hundred million dollars,”
My jaw dropped.
“You’re bluffing. There’s no way that was included in our contract.” I frowned.
“You can come see for yourself.” He waved the piece of paper in the air and I stomped towards him.
I snatched it from his hands and read the fine print.
Everything he said was true. I’m screwed.
“That…So, what do you want? Make my life here a living hell until I agree to marry you?” I shook but Matteo didn’t look fazed.
He took a sip of his coffee and slid the piece of paper back into his desk drawers.
“No.” He shook his head, turning to his computer. “You can continue with your job. My offer already expired, so I won’t be bothering you.”
I blinked twice and my shoulders sagged. Did I just make a fool of myself?
I took slow strides out of his office.
But when I twisted the doorknob, Matteo’s final words gave me chills.
“One more thing, don’t ever try to cause a scene in my office again.”
I was back in Cassie’s apartment packing my clothes and she couldn’t stop pacing across the room.
“We need a plan to get you out of Sullivan cars.” She mumbled, gnawing on her fingernails. “We can’t let this happen, he can’t force you to remain at his office.”
“Cas, there’s nothing more I can do. I just need to suck it up and tolerate whatever hell I signed myself up for.” I sighed.
“You can’t be serious. Anastasia, you don’t get it.” Cassie frowned, sitting beside me on the floor. “Sergio has something planned.”
“When doesn’t he? His mission is to destroy my life.” I muttered, ignoring the sting in my chest.
I still can’t believe he’s engaged but now that he tried to push Cassie and me apart from each other, that was the height of it.
I can’t hold Cassie’s choice against her. Santoro Motors is probably the best at paying their staff but not for the reasons anyone cares about.
It belongs to the Italian mafia, they use vehicles to make dirty money. I didn’t see a reason to leave before but Sergio convinced me.
“No, I’m serious. He doesn’t trust that you’ll keep your mouth shut about the company secrets. He could do something really bad to you.”
My mind went back to whoever pushed me off the balcony. How the elderly man immediately knew Sergio was behind it.
How am I going to stop him from doing it again?
“Do you trust me?” I asked Cassie and she looked at me with furrowed brows.
“I can’t pack out just yet. I need to finish off something at the office.” I placed my hand on hers and her eyes grew wide.
“What? Sergio wouldn’t like this. He gave you 24 hours and if he finds out, I’m fired.” She looked down at her clasped hands in her lap.
“He won’t, I promise. I’ll be gone by morning, just leave the door unlocked.” I reassured her and she nodded before pulling me in for a hug.
The cab man parked the car and I jumped out, running in the rain. My clothes were soaked but I didn’t care.
I made it into the building and Katherine looked at me with furrowed brows. I was the least bit shaken up because I had a goal in mind.
One goal.
I walked down the hall and made it to Matteo’s office.
I was face-to-face with his door. My heart was racing and I raised my fist to knock.
But what if he turns me down or says it’s already too late? I guess I’ll have to find out.
Here goes nothing.
I pushed the door open without knocking and Matteo looked up with flared nostrils.
“What do you think you’re doing?” He growled, slamming his fist on his desk.
“Will you marry me?”
