11 MARKULA “Are you ready?” I ask her. I don’t have to say for what. Silas squeezes her thigh from his spot beside her, his violet gaze worried. Draynor, too, has tensed on her other side, and if Draynor’s on edge, it’s a good bet anyone would be — he’s supposed to be the calm one. Dawn’s big blue eyes blink closed as she leans against the black silk of the couch, her head against the back. Her throat bared. Though I know Kain is in the other room with Era, though I know we’ll have plenty of warning if Era catches the scent of her blood and turns into a ravenous beast, though I know I can protect her … I still hate it. I hate that there is anything in this house that might be dangerous to her. I have already lost her enough times. I’ve seen her at the brink. I’ve seen her come back.
