18 SILAS I feel the moment her brain slams shut like a steel trap. And I’m not the only one. Era is fully dressed now, as the rest of us are, standing beside Draynor with his arms crossed. Everyone’s face snaps to the stairway when it happens. It’s a physical sensation in my head, and though Era might not be inamorata, he is close enough to feel it. To feel her. Agitation sets in almost immediately. We head for the second floor as a pack, like lions, like wolves, Draynor and me in the front, Kain behind us, Markula keeping tabs on Era from the end of the line. I do not hear our feet on the stairs — all I can hear is the absence of her in my brain. The silence. I step through the open bedroom door, and she slams straight into me, catching herself against my chest. Her eyes are wild.
