Back to Where It Began

Chapter 15 The black Rolls-Royce sped through the busy streets. Amara sat beside Damien, nervously twisting her fingers together. She never imagined she would return to her old neighborhood so soon. "What if the kidnapper isn't there anymore?" she asked. "Then we'll follow the next clue," Damien replied, keeping his eyes on the road. His voice was calm, but Amara could tell he was worried. An hour later, they arrived. Children played football on the dusty street, women chatted outside their shops, and loud music drifted from a nearby café. Everything looked normal. Too normal. Damien signaled to his security team. "Spread out. Ask if anyone has seen a young woman matching Isabella's photo." The guards nodded and disappeared in different directions. Amara looked toward the small house where she had grown up. "It feels strange being back." Damien noticed the sadness in her voice. "Do you want to go inside?" She hesitated before nodding. --- The front door creaked open. The house was almost empty. Most of the furniture had been sold. Dust covered the shelves. Amara slowly walked into the living room. "So this is where you grew up," Damien said quietly. She smiled sadly. "It was never perfect... but it was home." She picked up an old picture frame from the floor. It was a family photo taken years ago. She was only ten. Her mother stood beside her, smiling brightly. "My mom always believed our family would stay together forever." Damien looked at the photo. "She looks kind." "She was." Just then, Amara noticed something strange. The back of the picture frame looked thicker than usual. She carefully removed the cardboard cover. A folded letter slipped onto the floor. "What is this?" The envelope was yellow with age. On the front were four words written in blue ink. For Amara. Her hands trembled as she opened it. Inside was a letter in her mother's handwriting. «My dearest Amara, If you're reading this, it means I wasn't able to tell you everything myself. There are truths about our family that I've kept hidden because I wanted you to have a normal childhood. One day, someone may come looking for you. If that day comes, trust your heart more than your fears. And remember this: not everyone who smiles is your friend, and not everyone who seems cold is your enemy. I love you more than words can ever say. —Mom.» Tears filled Amara's eyes. She hugged the letter to her chest. "I miss her so much." Without saying a word, Damien gently placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You don't have to hide your tears." She looked at him. "I've been trying to stay strong." "Being strong doesn't mean never crying." For a moment, she leaned against him. He didn't pull away. He simply stood there, letting her grieve. Outside, one of the guards ran toward the house. "Sir!" Damien stepped outside immediately. "What did you find?" The guard held up a small key. "We found this hidden behind the old mailbox." Attached to it was a tag with a handwritten address. Damien read it silently. His expression changed. "What is it?" Amara asked. He looked at her. "I think..." "...we've just found the place where Isabella is being held."
