[Semi-edited] Chapter 1: Meeting Mr. Hadley There I was. Standing outside the huge white skyscraper looking up at the letters 'Hadley Enterprises.' I sighed looking back down at the wet stone walkways leading up to the big glass doors. Women walked in and out. Their hair pulled up in high ponytails, long tanned legs strode past me. I was nothing like them. Pale doll-like skin, curly brown hair that, as hard as I try, can't be tamed, and I was barely 5'5. These women were giants, maybe because of their six-inch heels, but still giants. I pushed against the glass door, but it wouldn't budge. I pushed again, much harder this time, and again it wouldn't move. I growled at the door hoping that maybe, somehow, it would work. "Here," a tall lady with strawberry blonde hair said, with a judging stare towards me, as she pulled the door open.  Why was I doing this again? "Thanks," I said through clenched teeth. I really wanted to yell in her face, tell her to stop being so judgy, but that would be unprofessional of me. I wanted this job- no, I needed this job. I walked in after the blonde chick, her butt waving in my face. That's how tall she was. I saw no men anywhere as I look at my surroundings. Saying the Hadley brothers liked the color white would be an understatement. Everything was sparkling pearl white. White walls, marble white floors that you could easily use as a mirror, white coffee tables with white love seats surrounding them. There was even a huge crystal chandelier hanging about twenty feet above my head that illuminated the entire lobby area. I felt so underdressed. This place and the people in it looked like they all came out of a cliche billionaire movie. I knew for a fact I didn't belong here, nor was I ever going to fit in, but I had to try. This was my only hope of staying afloat in this city, I wasn't going to let fancy people and white shiny floors get in my way. I walked up to the receptionist's desk, which could, easily, be over sixteen feet long. Along the marble top was a name sign saying the woman's name and a black cup that had many different sizes and shaped pencils inside. "I've come to see Mr. Hadley," I said with false confidence. I read somewhere that showing confidence can easily get you points with your employer, which for me, I desperately needed. "Which one?" She asked not even bothering to look up at me. She was typing away at something on the computer screen. "Mr. Ashton Hadley," I clarified not liking her tone with me. "There was this listing-," I bit my bottom lip to stop myself. She pulled up her phone and dialed a few numbers before holding it up to her ear. "Miss-" she paused finally looking up at me. I eventually realized what she was asking, and smiled slightly to myself. "Bennet" I smiled at my name. It was the one and only thing that actually belonged to me. "Miss Bennet is here for the interview. Should I send her up?" She nodded placing the phone back down on the desk. She said "You can go up," then resumed to her typing. I was going to ask her where to go but decided against it since she wasn't going to talk to me any more than she needed to. I slowly made my way to the elevator. Which one though? There were multiple elevators with tons of ladies stepping in and out. What was it about all these women, I thought as I chose a random elevator. I pressed the button, heard the ding and waited for the doors to open. When they did I stepped in, glad no one but me was in there. I tucked a loose strand of my dull brown hair behind my ear and leaned my back up against the wall. I was scared. Elevators were my second worst fear- the first being heights- but I had to get used to it. If I was going to have the job I wanted then going up and down elevators would be a common occurrence. I let out a sigh and closed my eyes counting the seconds until the doors would open again. 20-21-22-23, it seemed to go on forever. Maybe I chose the wrong one? I could just ask when I reach the top, but I don't feel like dealing with another receptionist chick again. I rolled my eyes remembering the disrespectful attitude she had towards me. Luckily for me, when the doors opened a bright smiling woman greeted me with, "Hello Miss Bennett," and led the rest of the way to the office. She was beautiful. Dark copper hair that flowed in waves down her back, her red dress seemed to show off the curve in her waist and hips. Her skin was flawless, unlike mine; I had a few freckles-everywhere- and it really stood out against my porcelain skin tone. "Mr. Hadley is in a meeting right now, so please just wait in his office." After she opened the door to let me in she walked right back out like she wasn't supposed to step a foot through the threshold, somewhat like it was holy ground that no one dared to step on.  Okay, weird.... I walked over to one of the black leather chairs that were in front of the mahogany wood desk. So this was Ashton Hadley's office? It was nothing like the lobby area. Most of the colors were dark toned. This whole office seemed really dark. I was starting to get impatient. Who leaves people waiting for an interview for over thirty minutes!? I stood up, walking around with my arms folded over my chest, heaving. I couldn't believe I was stood up. I just wanted to scream at the top of my lungs. An hour! It had been almost an hour already and I contemplated just leaving, but when I turn to look out the floor-to-ceiling window looking over the city, the door opened and slammed behind me. This is it, Lydia. This is your chance to get something for yourself, I thought as I counted to ten. Taking in a few deep breaths, I turned around. What I saw was inhuman. He was more like a god in a tight dark blue suit jacket. Ashton Hadley was like nothing I have ever seen before. Piercing blue eyes, the darkest shade of brown hair, and a sharp jaw. A slight stubble graced his face almost making me swoon instantly. I couldn't even force myself to look lower because I already knew what lies beneath his clothes. I felt myself slipping into his eyes, granted he never looks away from me, when he says with a husky cold tone, "Sit down before you fall." With that, I break eye contact and scurry over to the leather chair I had just been sitting in. I have never felt this intimidated before, especially by a guy. It was a strange new feeling that I didn't know if I liked or not. He sat down in front of me, folding his hands together on the desk. God, his stare could kill me. I was swooning again, falling into the oceans that he called his eyes. "You wanted a job, correct?" He asked coldly. My heart fluttered from the sound of his voice, but my head was screaming to walk away.  He wanted someone to take the job, correct? He didn't have to be an asshole. I decided it would be best to show my fake confidence instead and act more professional. "Yes, Mr. Hadley." The name rolls right off the tip of my tongue.  Now if I could say his first name while...Stop it! He smirked at me, probably seeing the light blush that crept up on my face. I slightly shifted in my seat waiting for his response. Then a thought occurred to me. I knew if- And that was a big if- I did get this job, it wouldn't be easy for me to work for this god-like man. Especially, if he makes me feel this way now, just wait until a month or two when I have to work here in his office and actually get to know him. I'd like to imagine him as a cold, stern boss who is secretly a romantic softy. Troubled past and unwanted love. I couldn't stop myself from blushing at the thought. "Do you have any experience working as a PA?" He asked looking down at my folder I handed in a week ago.  Yes and no, I chuckled to myself. "Mr. Hadley, Sir, I...um worked as my father's assistant for about a year and a half." Fiddling with my fingers was something I wasn't known for doing. I'm not one of those shy girls who act innocent, but with him, it seemed different. I was that innocent girl under his stare, with the blush on her face, playing with my fingers in her lap. I felt like he was stripping me naked and watching as I laid uncomfortably underneath his judgmental gaze.
