Chapter 3: I Want You To Look
The next morning I woke up to the sound of my annoying alarm ringing in my ear. I groaned slamming my hand down on the snooze button. The one thing I miss about home was not having to wake up early.
Mr. Hadley expected me to arrive every day an hour before him, which happened to be around 5:30 in the morning, to get things prepared for him and get his coffee.
I slipped on the pencil skirt from yesterday since it's my only one, and a red blouse to match. After I tried to straighten my hair, failing miserably, and eating breakfast I was ready for the day.
It was freezing outside. The wind must have been blowing harder than it did yesterday because I felt off-balanced. Every time the wind blew I felt like I was about to fall. One of the many problems with me in heels.
I stood still staring up at the same skyscraper as yesterday. The clouds covered the blue sky, the bright smiling sun, and made the day seem dull and sad. I wasn't going to let that affect me today, though. I was planning on showing Mr. Ashton Hadley how mature and responsible I can be.
I made my way into the building, holding myself around my torso to keep myself from freezing. I smiled at the receptionist while also giving her a death glare. She just returned it with her own as I walked away with a devilish grin. I knew it was going to be fun playing with her.
The elevator seemed more crowded than usual since there were more snobby women coming in and out of the doorway. I sighed and tried to squeeze my way into the elevator.
The worst thing than an elevator going up sixty floors is an elevator going up sixty floors with more than fifteen people in it, with me squished between them.
This was not okay.
The bell dinged signaling that we were here. All the people rushed out leaving me stunned with my hair sticking out at every angle. I had to keep telling myself that I needed this job, probably way more than any of these skinny bimbos, so I wouldn't rage quit my first day because I felt like doing just that.
The same woman came and greeted me with, "Hello, Miss Bennett," and a handshake. I still couldn't believe how pretty she was. She couldn't compare to the gods that apparently ran this place, but she was still gorgeous.
So far on my grand tour I have been to this floor's lobby, Mr. Hadley's office, my mini office- I assume I'm not going to use it much- the meeting room, and the break room.
Supposedly, Mr. Hadley doesn't like coffee from the break room so I'd have to go out of my way to get a cup of plain black for him. Not to mention with my own money!
Luckily, Belle, the lady who was with me, got it for me today since I didn't know. I can see her and me becoming great friends.
She wished me luck as she pushed me towards Mr. Hadley's office. "Now remember," she said in my ear, "Don't touch anything in Mr. Hadley's office. He's very picky about his stuff. Don't talk when not spoken to, and for absolutely no reason look him in the eyes." Too late for that one, I thought. I smile widely as I remembered the look of his eyes staring into mine.
I don't think I'll be able to not look him in the eyes.
I held the coffee in my hands, loving the warmth that it brings me, and sat quietly waiting for the infamous Mr. Hadley. I was almost nervous about our next meeting.
The door opened and closed behind me. My back straightened as I felt his presence come from my back to my sides to my front.
Follow what Belle said, I kept telling myself.
Taking a few deep breaths I hand the coffee to Mr. Hadley and turn to leave.
"Where are you going?" He asked almost with a hint of concern, but I ignore it and turn to face him, smiling like a psychopath.
"I'm going to my office to work. Thank you by the way for the space." I was looking down the entire time I was talking fiddling with my finger.
"What have you been told so far?" He asked with a raised eyebrow. The room felt like it was spinning. I don't know if it was because of his never-ending stare on me or my incredibly high heels.
"That I have to be here two hours before you, with a coffee every day, never speak when not spoken to, and never look you in the eyes." I almost giggled to myself. It felt like I was a child being reprimanded.
I looked up at him only to find I was looking at a completely different person. He was smiling, but not just smiling, laughing, too. His teeth were shining white, dimples were on either cheek. Watching him smile like that made me happy. I felt like I accomplished something no man has ever done.
"Why are you laughing, sir.?" I questioned. The moment I opened my mouth he stopped and cleared his throat.
"I want you to look at me, Miss Bennet." The way he said it almost hinted at something peculiar, but I pushed that aside and stared him directly where I wasn't supposed to.
My goodness, was he always this tall or did he grow two feet since yesterday?
He cleared his throat."Well, umm.... I need you to sort out my emails. Before then prepare the meeting room for a gathering with the council. The things are already in there for you; it's at four sharp. I need you to take notes for me during and afterward."
What did he just say? I was too busy looking at his flawless self I didn't catch what he said.
"Yes, Mr. Hadley," I said with a nod and walked to the door. "I'll have it all ready for you."
A few hours later I barely had anything ready! I had totally blanked on what he said, and I was panicking and bouncing all over the place. In the end, I had to ask Belle what I was supposed to do.
I had just got through about half of the emails when I looked down at my clock.
3:30. Did he say three or four?
I made my way to the meeting room where I found a stack of papers and pencils and empty glasses were placed in front of each chair. I assumed they had to be filled with water from my prior experience.
By 3:55 the papers were evenly distributed throughout the table and each glass was filled with water. That's when I realized I forgot my notepad to take notes.
I dashed, with wide eyes, down the corridor to my office. My feet tripping on every possible crack and carpet.
I wanted to scream. My first day here and my office was already cluttered, but I held my composure knowing everyone might hear me and worry.
After a few minutes of searching, almost ripping my hair out, and biting my lip till it bled, I ultimately found my notepad in my desk drawer under some papers.
The thing was, I was sure I was on time. I was absolutely, positively sure I had a few minutes to spare, but it turned out I didn't. When I burst through the door, twelve men looked up from their papers toward me, including the infamous Mr. Ashton Hadley sitting at the front end. Some looked older than him with grey beards and grey hair, while others looked around their mid-thirties with chiseled features.
I wanted to drown myself in my own ecstasy. This must have been the council. I gulped before sitting down in the empty seat next to Mr. Hadley.
He glared down at me like I was the most disgusting thing on the planet. It hurt, but I wasn't going to let it affect me. I sat up straight so my back didn't touch the chair and lifted my chin up so I seemed almost confident.
Not once did I look to my left at him, but I could feel his eyes glare through me the entire time. Even when he was talking about his plans on expanding his part of the company I could still feel his eyes glance at me.
