Chapter 16
PIPER'S POV
A few weeks later, with the little knowledge I was able to gather from working with Anna, I started on something with the hopes that it would actually help me take care of myself and my baby without Anna's help. She really helped me by encouraging me all the way and pitching my ideas to bigger brands and companies.
On an auspicious day, while I was in my bedroom sitting and looking out the window, lost in thoughts on what to do with my life and how to push my brand forward, how to be successful, and how to get back at Ethan, the door flew open, leaving me in shock.
"Piper!!" Anna yelled as she pushed the door open, panting like she was being chased by a wild horse.
I instantly sprang out of bed, "Are you okay?!" I hurried towards her, totally confused about what was going on.
"Piper..." She called out again, holding her hand to her chest and panting, "Is everything okay? What's going on?!" I asked with great concern.
"Pi... Piper" she breathed. I grabbed her by the waist and led her towards the bed and guided her to sit. Worried, I sat next to her, gently rubbing her back. She handed me the mail in her hands while slowly beating her chest.
After I collected the mail from her, I rushed to the kitchen and poured a glass of water. As I handed it to her, she said, "Open the mail." And then took a gulp of water. Wearing a smile on her face.
I sat next to her, confused as I slowly opened the mail, only to find out it was from Langford, one of the biggest company brands we've both been trying to pitch my small brand ideas to.
My eyes grew wide when I saw their large stamp on the letter, "From Langford group?!" I turned to her. I could feel my palms growing sweatier by the minute and my heart racing. I finally understood why Anna ran in here like she was about to have a heart attack.
"Yes! I was too excited to tell you." She responded. Placing the cup on the cupboard.
"Do you think I was rejected?" I asked, my voice shaky.
"Of course not! You don't know that, now let's not be negative. This is your one shot to being one of the biggest CEO's in the city, it's only a matter of time." She grabbed my hands and looked at me," Or don't you know what it means to get a response from Langford? You can imagine the number of people who actually apply there; they don't send responses to everyone, you know that, right?"
" You're right, Anna," I said.
" Go on, open it."
I slowly unwrapped it, and carefully read through the first paragraph. I didn't even need to continue reading when I spotted the word " Successfully." I immediately let out a scream and turned to Anna.
I fell straight into her hands that were wide open as she enveloped me in a warm hug. My eyelids grew watery, and as I blinked, the warm tears rolled down my cheeks. I felt a hard lump in my throat. I was so excited that I grew weak.
"I can't believe this!" I sniffled, taking another look at the sheet of paper in my hands. It felt surreal, completely unbelievable, like a dream come true.
I turned to Anna, the smile she was beaming at me never wavered off, "You deserve it, after all you worked super hard for this."
I wiped my hands across my face, wiping the tears off, " So what does this mean now?" I asked unbelievably.
"What does this mean?! It means your life has changed forever,"
My cheeks flushed red. I couldn't help but start imagining how my life would eventually turn out. "I have a meeting with them first thing tomorrow morning."
"Well then, you'd better start preparing. Remember, you need to look your best; that's very important." Anna advised.
" I think I'm nervous... What do I say when I get there? What if I flop?"
" You won't flop, Piper, remember what I've told you about positivity? We would not have come this far if we were always being negative. I think you should get enough rest and sleep, and then tomorrow morning, I'll help you prepare as early as possible, so you don't miss this opportunity. How does that sound?" Anna asked, with her hands gently rubbing my shoulders.
"Anna?" I whispered, "You're the best thing that happened to me in a really long time. I really appreciate every way possible you've tried to help me.
"Just know I'll always be here for you." She said, cupping my chin in her hands, "I'll go prepare dinner now okay?" She said and made her way out.
I sat there, wallowing in excitement and joy, and deep down in my heart, I could feel myself having the upper hand to finally teach that nitwit a lesson for the way he treated me. All I needed to do was to work a little bit harder, and I would get to where I wanted to be. I did feel a bit sad because, aside from Anna, I had no one else to celebrate with.
I looked down at my belly and rubbed it gently. I remembered one day my child would want to know who its father is, and I had no idea who it was. But on the bright side, with this big gig, I knew it was promised that I would be able to take good care of my child, and that's all I needed to know.
The next morning, Anna escorted me to the bus stop, and within a matter of minutes, I was already on my way to the city where Langford's group's company was situated.
By the time I got there, I met with the secretary, "Hi, I'm Piper Reyes, my proposal got accepted here--"
After scrolling through her computer, she interrupted, " Oh! Yeah, Ms. Reyes, we have been expecting you. Your meeting with the boss is scheduled for ..." She paused and then stole a glance at her wristwatch, " Is scheduled for right now. So you're to meet him in the boardroom. It's just right down the hall on your left."
"Oh... Alright, thank you." I responded.
Following my knock on the door came a muffled response. "Come in."
I pushed the glass door gently and shut it behind me when I got in. I turned around and watched "the boss" turn his seat to reveal, and what I saw was the least I imagined. "What the..." I whispered.
