PIPER'S POV
It's been weeks since Ethan kicked me out, and not even a word have I heard from him, nor have I seen him around, nor has he made a reply to the mockery and insensitive comments I was getting from the media.
At the same time, it's been quite a while since I met Mr. Mysterious, and we still haven't crossed paths ever since then. The money I stole from me had been sustaining me up to this point. After the night at the hotel, I was back to sleeping in the subway or abandoned stores and taking naps on benches in the park.
Life only grew worse; I was still unable to find a job, and it seemed like I had already caught the flu. I walked into the pharmacy, and all eyes were on me, the whispers increased, but only reduced when I got to the counter.
"I'll need medication for a flu and a fever maybe," I ordered.
" Okay, I'll be right back." The cashier turned over to the shelves, searching for the drugs I requested, whereas I held my head in my hands when I started to feelvery ,very dizzy., I squinted my eyes when it felt like the entire room was spinning. For extra support, I placed my hand on the counter.
"Ma'am here at the drugs --"
The last thing I remembered was falling to the ground and seeing a lot of faces gathered around me. Next thing I knew, there was a beeping sound that filled the air. I woke up on a soft, comfortable bed with tubes and wires connected to my hands.
I scanned the room from my bed when I noticed I was in a hospital. Immediately, the memory of when I slumped at the pharmacy where I went to get drugs for my flu and fever, but I wasn't sure how I got here.
There came a knock on the door, kicking me out of my train of thought, "
"Hello, Piper Reyes, how are you feeling?" The doctor said to me wearing a gummy smile on his face.
"I'm okay. Sir, how did I get here? Who brought me here?" I asked, deep in my heart, I was expecting to hear Ethan had something to do with it, but when the doctor flipped some pages on the paperwork in his grip, he turned to me and said, "You collapsed at a pharmacy. The good citizens called you an ambulance. You were brought her in on an emergency."
I let out a disappointed sigh, " Oh... Okay."
"Albeit, none of your family or friends have come to see you. If there is anyone you would like us to contact on your behalf?" He asked, still wearing that annoying gummy smile.
"No, sir," I grumbled. I folded my hands at my chest, with my head buried in the bed sheets, disappointed at myself and my life.
"Okay then, moving on... So we ran you some tests, you know, to see if any foreign bodies would have caused your slump. You're free from every possible infection, but then there is a foreign body in there, alright." He let out a soft chuckle.
"What an unfunny joke," I muttered to myself.
"What was that, ma'am? He asked.
"I'm asking what foreign body we're talking about?"
"I'm pleased to inform you, Ms Piper Reyes, you're pregnant. Congratulations."
" What?!" I raised my gaze to him in shock, and immediately I could feel my heart racing like I had just gone horse riding. " What do you mean by that?"
He handed me a document, "Open it." He said as I aggressively looked at the paperwork. "Those are the results from the laboratory which is where we conduct tests. Behind the last sheet is an image from the scan indicating your foetus' heartbeat.
"No, no no! No! This can't be." I panicked in my mind. "Doctor, can I please leave now?" I asked. I felt so restless... I didn't have a house or a job, I could barely even fend for myself, and having a child on the way was the last thing I needed right now. The worst part is, there's a chance this child belongs to Ethan, from the night before the divorce but then, there's the stranger from the bar. I brushed my hand through my face and swallowed the hard rock that was stuck in my chest.
"Ma'am?" The doctor's voice echoed in my head.
"Is everything alright?"
"Err... Yes ... Sure everything's fine." I responded, wearing a fake smile on my face.
"Very well then, I will quickly discharge you. The drugs which I have prescribed to you for the sake of the baby's health and yours too, will be handed over to you and you can start taking them from today after you've had a full meal to prevent accidents like this from happening again."
"Alright, sir."
"Once again, congratulations." He said, shooting that annoying smile at me.
After a moment, I was back on the street, except this time I was in even more turmoil. "How could this be? How on earth am I supposed to manage this? A pregnancy? Now is a very horrible time. The doctor said something about a full meal, but I can barely even afford a burger."
The most annoying part was that I wasn't sure who owned the baby; basically, I have no idea who the father of my child is.
I sat under a tree at the park, resting the weight of my head on my arms seriously thinking of what the next step to take was as I stared at the pregnancy test results. Even in my next life, I wouldn't want to bore a child to Ethan. I would never be the one to cause an innocent child so much pain by boring him to a toxic, loveless father figure. Ethan never let me for one day, I yearned for the barest minimum, yet he couldn't give it to me.
Then there was Mr mysterious, whom I knew nothing about. I began to consider leaving the city and starting off on a fresh and clean slate. Hopefully, I will be able to get a job and still fend for myself and my baby. After all, there was nothing left for me here, no lover, no job, and no life. I made up my mind to leave first thing the next morning.
