Chapter 8

1132 Words
I was the last one to arrive for breakfast. I took a seat next to my sis and tried to behave as casually as possible. Paula too was trying to do the same thing. We didn’t want to give our mothers any non-verbal cues about what we had shared last night. I had once read in a book that your body language could betray your thoughts and actions. Last night Paula had left my room in a hurry after finishing the hand job. I would like to ask her whether she enjoyed it as much as I had, but that was impossible for the time being. I would have to wait a few hours until the others were out of the way. There was no sign of Luigi anywhere-he must have left in the middle of the night after screwing my aunt. I took a slice of toast and started spreading strawberry jam over it while pondering at the same time whether it would be wise to ask what time had the meeting ended last night. “Your cousin Angelo is coming today,” announced my mother. “I’ll drive to the port at eleven to pick him up.” “Just don’t put him in my room,” I said with my mouth full of bread. “Come on! It will only be a few days. You can take the couch on the ground floor.” I slouched back on the chair and let a sigh escape my mouth. This was very bad news. Not only I was going to lose all my privacy, they were going to kick me out of my room for the sake of my stupid cousin. On the bright side, I did manage to get my hand job last night. What a relief! Thanks to Angelo, there would be no privacy for Paula and me. He will probably spend the largest part of the day hanging out with us. I could not help wonder how Angelo would react to the presence of Paula in her bikini. Would he get any weird ideas in the same way as I did? How was I supposed to feel if he tried to sneak one night in Paula’s room? These constant thoughts-which I could not find a way to erase from my mind-were to become a source of frustration. However, I knew that whatever was destined to happen between the two of them, I was not allowed to display any form of jealousy. “Wanna go to the beach?” I asked Paula. “Not now. Let’s wait for Angelo to get here.” “Great! The competition had begun even though Angelo had not arrived yet.” “Let’s go together,” said my sister and grabbed the sleeve of my t-shirt. I made a puzzled face and looked up at my mom. “Yeah, you can take her with you. Just be here before twelve.” “All right, let’s do it then,” I said and got up from the table. We rode a bike to the plage and sat on a pair of stretchers under an umbrella. Compared to the isolated spot I usually went with Paula, this spot was a cosmopolitan hub of activity. There was a small shop and a few seats facing the sea. At this moment, a pair of old folks wearing caps were waist high in the water and a few more were sitting on the beach. Most of these people lived in the houses nearby ours but I did not know anyone of them. What I knew is that they had retired from their jobs and came here every summer. They seldom bothered to visit the other side of the island-what they valued most was the isolation that this area offered. It’s probably the perfect place to withdraw if you’re tired of other people and life in general. I was too bored to enter the water so I ordered an expresso and watched my sister as she ran along the coast back and forth. She splashed in the water for a few minutes before she came and sat next to me. “What do you want to drink?” I asked. “A coke.” I gestured the old man and gave him my order. Just by watching my sis sip on the coke through the straw made me feel unusually peaceful. She was a thin kid with large eyes and wavy black hair tied up behind her head. Because there were no other kids to play with, her manners were quite adult like. The benefits of hanging out with adults all day long and listen to their endless theories. “Do you think aunt will marry Luigi?” “Why do you say that?” “I saw them kissing at the restaurant last night.” “Did mother see that?” “Nope. She had gone to the toilet when they were doing that.” “When people don’t see each other for a long time they behave in such a way. Anyway, aunt cannot marry Luigi. She is already married.” “But people get divorced all the time.” “How do you know that?” “Lots of my classmates’ parents are divorced. Do you think mom and dad will ever get a divorce?” “You don’t need to worry about that. Mom and dad love each other.” “Then why aren’t they together all the time?” “Dad needs to be away for his work.” “I miss him,” she said and stared down at her sand covered toes. “Do you miss him?” Now that was something that I had no asked myself for a long time. Maybe I felt comfortable with being the only male around the house. With my dad and uncle busy with their jobs, I somehow responsible for the well-being of all the females in the house. Something that was about to change with the appearance of Angelo. He was older and smarter than I was and his presence posed a threat to my status as leading male of the pack. Of course, Luigi was also a man, but things were quite different with him. He was only a short-term visitor and his presence didn’t affect my relation with Paula. On the contrary, he had become my good luck charm. By keeping my aunt busy, he was giving me the chance to get closer to Paula. This was the main difference between Luigi and Angelo. One was a potential assistant and the other a potential rival.
