Chapter 16

By the time we were back to Luigi’s the entire team had reassembled. It was almost six and the fiesta was not going to start for another three hours. Luigi we suggested to go to a café facing the beach but my mom and aunt had different plans. They wanted us to drive back home so that everyone could take a shower and change into something more appropriate for the evening. In addition, the cat had not been fed. Not wanting to return to his place afterwards, Luigi put on a pair of white trousers and a shirt. In no time, we were on the way back to the far side of the island. Nobody spoke much in the car. It seemed that everyone wanted to take a short break from the constant socializing. The sun was now falling and the darkness had almost entirely swallowed our little vehicle. There were no streetlights and a large portion of the road remained unpaved. If we pulled aside and turned off the headlights, it would be pitch black all around us. The silence in the car reverberated the stillness of the landscape. To talk would simply spoil the magic of the moment. Each person had his eyes fixed on the road straight ahead as if they were waiting for an unexpected revelation. For the moment, there was none apart from an endless row of trees from both sides of the road. I supposed that the underlying optimism of the moment sprung from the fact that there was party at the end of the dark road. There would be dancing, wine, and laughter until the early hours of the morning. Even I was overcome by this surge of excitement despite the fact that I had my peak moment just a couple of hours earlier in Luigi’s dingy washroom. Was there anything better to expect on such a day? At that moment I was certain that the answer would be no. For the next thirty minutes, the situation at home was chaotic. Apart from Luigi, who was walking back and forth in the yard with a glass of red wine in his hand, everyone else was trying to secure a position in one of the two bathrooms. The lucky ones to shower first were Karen and Paula. If only out of courtesy, the males of the family would have to bathe last. The only thing for Stefano and me to do until all the women had showered was to hang out in the yard with Luigi. “It’s a pleasure to see you and Paula being so close to each other after being apart for four years,” said Stefano. “It helps that there aren’t many other people around.” “Don’t be so full of sarcasm. I believe that what makes this holiday so special for Paula is your presence.” “Even if that is true, pretty soon she will be off to Canada and we may not see each other for another four years. By that time she will have a college boyfriend and most likely will not want to spend her holidays here.” “You can never be sure about that. Look at me. I have a college girlfriend but that didn’t prevent me from coming here for the holidays.” “I’m sure it wasn’t the first choice.” “We’re going to spend ten days here and maybe go to Crete or Santorini afterwards,” said Angelo. “I hope she doesn’t find a new Greek lover there,” joked Luigi. “Nah! She’s passed that stage. Haven’t you heard that Italians do it better?” “It’s true,” said Luigi. “However, you should never underestimate the subconscious need for primitive, raw, lust. The great God Pan is playing his flute on a rocky hillside where he awaits a blonde girl of ravishing beauty that will come all the way from the Northern regions of Europe to be seduced by his charms.” “Karen’s free to do whatever she wants. The same applies to me,” said Angelo with a grin. “I bet you wouldn’t be talking like this if it wasn’t so easy for you to hook up with girls,” I said. “My prediction for this summer is that you’re also going to hook up with a pretty girl very soon,” said Angelo. “That aura of indifference makes him somehow attractive,” admitted Luigi. “Who knows,” said Angelo. “Tonight could be the night you have been waiting for!” I pondered a few moments on the gravity of Angelo’s words. Was he able to sense something that I did not suspect about myself? Maybe he was right and I would be able to hook up with a girl that was not my cousin. I wasn’t sure if I would discover my hidden potential in time but the fact that people like Angelo and Luigi saw something in me, made me feel good. “Got to get rid of the smell of the sea salt,” I said and left them to go upstairs. Paula was still in the shower while my aunt was getting dressed. I went to my room and began searching for something to wear. I spent most of the time wearing a dirty t-shirt and a pair of jeans that had been cut at the knees. Given that tonight was a special occasion I needed to find something more formal. The fact that I didn’t have many clothes in my wardrobe did help. A pair of crisp gray pants and a black blouse were the most formal clothes I could come up with. I laid them on the bed and headed to the bathroom. It took almost half an hour for the women in the house to decide what to wear at the fiesta. Karen put on a yellow, sleeveless dress that left her entire back bare, my aunt wore a white linen dress with a low cut that exposed a large portion of the breast, my mom a dark knee-length dress, and my sister wore a t-shirt, baggy shorts and sneakers. The last one to show up was Paula. White shorts, the type that was tight around the waist but wider at the bottom, a tight tank top that exposed her flat belly, and sandals. On her face she had applied a light pink lipstick and blue mascara. Paula was the perfect date, the only problem was that I couldn’t date her because she was my cousin. Sticking your genitals into other people’s genitals even if they were your cousins wasn’t such a big deal, as long as you didn’t fall in love with them. No matter how stunning Paula looked, I was determined to stick with the rule. I wasn’t going to allow myself to fall in love with her.
