I took a deep breath, straightening myself. The pill had already started to work, and I felt a bit livelier. I was ready, or at least as ready as I could be. Then, with a nod to the guard, I stepped forward.
The main pit was noisy. There were voices barking orders, the sounds of torture tools dropping to the floor, and the occasional scream. It was a carefully controlled problem. Strange wolves filled the area. This was the type of problem that happened when people were trying to look busy and hide the truth all at once.
Did Malakai's presence do this? The guard said so himself. The nobles were annoyed already. The guard shoved me forward, and I stumbled. The guard scoffed. He muttered under his breath.
"Thank the Goddess I saw you, or else I'd be shivering like those idiots."
