The University of New Mexico Hospital and Clinics sat in the center of a huge campus. During nurses’ training, I had done some of my rotations there and it had grown larger since then. I parked in the new structure and hurried to the emergency room. The large waiting room crawled with Friday night specials. It was nearly midnight and it would get busier in a couple of hours when the bars closed.
My dad was standing near the desk, looking down the hallway.
“Dad, I’m sorry it took so long for me to get here. Traffic was awful.”
He wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tight, “I’m just glad you’re here, kiddo. They just took Mom down to X-ray. She seems to be all right but banged up. I talked to her for a minute before the doctor saw her.”
