The journey, although only just over a hundred miles, took several hours. Eva felt a growing sense of frustration as Madden simply would not drive any faster. She knew why. Whatever he was, be it human or otherwise, he thought he was driving to his end in Birmingham. The traffic around them bustled by, and despite the companions within the car, and the strangers without, the foreboding began to press in on Eva. In time, the heart of the city became visible.
