Chapter 15

Nate’s Pov The executor’s words hit me. I stared at him, Serena still on my lap, her body going rigid against mine. “What did you just say?” My voice came out low, controlled, but inside everything was spinning. Not Victor’s son? After all these years of hating the man for what he did to my mother, to the company—to me? Serena turned in my arms, her green eyes wide and full of the same shock I felt. Her hand came up to my cheek, warm and steady even though she was trembling. “Nate… breathe. This is just more lies. More of their games.” I covered her hand with mine, holding it there against my face. Her touch grounded me. “I’m okay,” I told her softly, but we both knew it was a lie. I pulled her closer, burying my face in her neck for a second, breathing her in. Vanilla and strength. The only real thing left. “Whatever this says, we’re still us. I love you, Serena. That doesn’t change.” She hugged me tight, her fingers threading through my hair. “I love you too. So much. We’ve survived worse today. The tests, Diana, Victor… we’ll survive this.” Her voice was quiet, just for me, soft and fierce like the girl who’d jumped into stormy water all those years ago. Victor laughed from across the room, a sharp sound that made my blood boil. “Finally, the great Eleanor’s last twist. She always suspected I wasn’t your real father, Nate. Some nobody from her past before me. That’s why she wrote the will this way—to force you to confront the mess and maybe build something better.” “Shut your mouth,” I snapped, but I didn’t let go of Serena. She stayed right there on my lap, her weight comforting, her hand rubbing slow circles on my chest. Robert watched us quietly from the couch, his face full of quiet sympathy. The executor cleared his throat. “The letter suggests a possible different paternity for you, Mr. Calloway. Combined with Serena’s results, it complicates the clause significantly. We’ll need fresh DNA from all parties. The company’s future depends on clarity within the remaining timeframe.” Serena shifted so she could look at me properly. Her forehead rested against mine. “Hey. Look at me.” I did. Those eyes, tired but full of love, searched mine. “You are not defined by Victor or whoever your real dad is. You built this company from the ashes. You found me after ten years. You’re the man I fell in love with. Strong. Kind under all that armor. That’s real.” I kissed her then, slow and deep, pouring everything into it. The fear, the anger, the relief of having her here. She kissed me back, hands cupping my face, like she was trying to hold all my broken pieces together. When we pulled apart, both a little breathless, I whispered, “You make me believe I can handle anything. Thank you for staying. For choosing me even when it’s this messy.” “I’m not going anywhere,” she said, smiling a little through the tears in her eyes. “We do the new tests. We talk to Robert. We figure out what family really means. You and me first. Always.” We stood up together, her hand never leaving mine. I kept her close as the new lab tech prepared everything again. Swabs for me, Serena, Victor, even Robert for full comparison. Serena stayed right by my side the whole time, her shoulder brushing mine, her quiet presence louder than any of Victor’s taunts. After, we moved to the kitchen while the samples went out for rush processing. I made us coffee—simple, black for me, with cream for her the way she liked. She hopped up on the counter, watching me. I stepped between her legs, hands on her waist. “Talk to me,” I said, echoing our earlier talks. “What are you feeling right now? Be honest.” She wrapped her legs loosely around me, pulling me closer. “Scared for you. You’ve carried so much hate for Victor. If he’s not your dad… it might feel like losing something and gaining something all at once. But I’m glad. Because it means we’re not… you know. Related. We can love each other without shadows.” I nodded, forehead against hers. “Yeah. That part feels like a weight lifting. But the rest? I don’t know who I am if not the guy who rose above his father’s mistakes.” My hands tightened on her waist. “You make me want to find out who I really am. With you.” “You’re the man who cleared my family’s debt without hesitation,” she whispered. “The one who held me through every bomb Diana dropped. The one I want to marry for real.” She kissed me softly, then deeper, her fingers in my hair. We stayed like that, lost in each other, until Marcus knocked lightly on the doorframe. “Samples are away. Press is getting worse. Diana’s interview is everywhere.” Serena sighed but didn’t pull away. “We’ll handle it. Together.” The rest of the evening blurred into quiet moments. We sat with Robert, talking real things—his memories of Serena as a little girl, my better memories of my mom. Serena curled against me on the couch, her head on my shoulder, our hands linked. Every few minutes I’d kiss her temple or squeeze her fingers, reminding us both this was real. “I’m so tired,” she admitted later as we stood on the balcony again, city lights below. “But I don’t want to sleep without you knowing I love you. No matter what the tests say tomorrow.” I held her from behind, arms around her middle, chin on her shoulder. “I love you more. We’re getting married, Serena. Soon. Will or no will. I want you in my life every day after this.” She leaned back into me, warm and trusting. “Yes. I want that too. A real life. Maybe even with kids someday, far from all this drama.” We went to bed eventually—her room, but I stayed with her, holding her close under the covers. No pressure, just comfort. She fell asleep with her head on my chest, breathing even. I stayed awake longer, watching her, thinking about the tests, my mother’s secrets, what family could mean now. Around dawn, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I grabbed it carefully, not waking her. Marcus: New preliminary results leaked somehow. Diana has them. You’re not Victor’s. But there’s more—another twist on Serena’s side. She’s heading to the penthouse now. I tensed. Serena stirred, eyes fluttering open. “What is it?” Before I could answer, the front door security alert chimed. Then pounding on the door. We got up fast. I pulled on a shirt, Serena wrapped herself in a robe. We walked to the door together, my arm around her. I checked the screen. Diana stood there, flanked by a reporter and Victor. But behind them, Dr. Fitch—Robert’s doctor—looked nervous, holding another envelope. Diana smiled coldly as I opened the door. “Time for the full truth, lovebirds. The new tests confirm Nate isn’t Victor’s. But Serena… you share more than one secret with the Calloway line.” Serena gripped my hand hard. “What are you talking about?” Dr. Fitch stepped forward reluctantly. “I’m sorry. The records… there was a twin. Hidden. Your mother gave birth to two. The other was… taken in by the Calloways under Eleanor’s arrangement.”
