Chapter 18

Serena’s Pov Diana’s words dropped like a bomb in the conference room. Me? The third sibling? I felt the air leave my lungs. Nate’s arm tightened around my waist instantly, pulling me against his side like he could protect me from the words. His body was warm and solid, the only thing keeping me steady. “No,” I whispered. “That can’t be right. You’ve been attacking us this whole time. Why would you do that if we’re family?” Nate’s hand rubbed my back in slow circles. “Serena, breathe. We’ve heard lies before. This is just another one.” His voice was low, just for me. He kissed my temple quick, his lips warm. “I’ve got you. Always.” Diana crossed her arms, looking pleased with the chaos. “Eleanor’s letters don’t lie. Victor had another daughter. Me. Different mother, same mess. I found out years ago. That’s why I got close to Nate. Why I kept digging. The will, the company, all of it should’ve been partly mine.” The executor shuffled papers, looking overwhelmed. “We’ll verify with new tests. But the documents suggest multiple hidden children. The clause gets more complicated.” I turned into Nate’s chest, hiding my face for a second. His arms wrapped around me fully, one hand cradling the back of my head. “I love you,” he whispered into my hair. “This doesn’t change us. Sister or enemy, Diana doesn’t get to take what we have.” His words helped. I lifted my head and looked at him. Those dark eyes were full of love, tired but sure. “I love you too. So much. You keep holding me together when everything breaks. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” “You won’t have to find out,” he said softly. He cupped my face and kissed me right there, gentle and deep. I kissed him back, clinging to his shirt, letting the moment block out the room. When we pulled apart, my cheeks felt warm. Nate kept his forehead against mine. “We do this together. Every step.” Marcus—my twin brother—stood nearby, looking stunned. “Diana… if this is true, we’re all connected. But the way you’ve gone after Serena… that’s not family.” Diana shrugged. “Family never did me any favors. I want what’s mine.” Nate kept one arm around me as we sat down. I stayed pressed to his side, his hand in mine under the table. His thumb rubbed my knuckles, calm and steady. It helped me breathe through the shock. Robert watched everything quietly. “More kids. More secrets. Serena, you okay?” I nodded, squeezing Nate’s hand. “Because of him. And you, Dad. And now Marcus. We’ll sort the rest.” The meeting dragged on. Tests were ordered again. Nate stayed focused on me the whole time—getting me water, whispering encouragement, never letting go of my hand. When Diana tried to push more accusations, Nate shut her down calmly but firmly. “She’s been through enough,” he said. “Back off.” Later, back in the car, Nate pulled me onto his lap. I curled into him, head on his shoulder. “Thank you,” I murmured. “For not pulling away. For still wanting me through all this insanity.” He tilted my chin up, eyes soft. “Wanting you? I need you, Serena. You make my world make sense. I love you. Twin, secret sister, whatever comes next… we face it as a team.” I kissed him, slow and full of everything I felt. His hands held my waist, warm and sure. We stayed like that for the whole ride, talking quietly about small things—how we’d tell Lily, what a real wedding might look like, dreams beyond the company drama. At the penthouse, Nate made us tea. We sat on the couch with Marcus and Robert. I leaned against Nate, his arm around me. It felt like family, messy as it was. “You’re handling this better than I am,” I told Nate later when we were alone in the bedroom. I changed into comfortable clothes while he watched me with soft eyes. “You make me strong,” he said, pulling me into bed with him. We lay facing each other, legs tangled. “I used to face everything alone. Now I have you. It changes everything.” I touched his face, tracing his jaw. “I love you, Nate. More every day. Even when sisters appear out of nowhere.” He smiled and kissed me. Deep, loving, full of promise. We held each other close, talking until we got sleepy. His fingers in my hair felt like safety. Morning brought more chaos. The new tests arrived early. Nate held my hand as the executor read the summary. “Confirmed. Diana is Victor’s daughter. Half-sister to Nate in one way, connected through the hidden lines. But there’s one more detail in Eleanor’s final letter. She arranged everything because she knew the real threat wasn’t the affairs. It was something bigger— a family pact from decades ago between the Voss and Calloway lines that involved trading children for business power.” I gripped Nate’s hand harder. “What does that mean for us?” The executor looked up. “The marriage clause was designed to break the old pact. But if you marry within the time, it activates a final condition. Full merger of assets… and full exposure of all remaining secrets. Including who really controls the company behind the scenes.” Nate pulled me close. “We don’t have to do it if you’re not ready. I choose you over everything.” Before I could answer, the door opened. A woman I didn’t recognize walked in, elegant and cold, holding old photos. “I’m Claire Sutton,” she said. “Diana’s ally. But I’m also the one who knows the full truth. The pact started with our grandmothers. And one of you… isn’t who you think.” Nate and I looked at each other, hearts racing. She held up a photo of a young Eleanor holding two babies.
