Chapter 4

"Dad, please tell me you remembered to pay up, this time." "Carly!" Carly rolled her eyes. "I'm serious, dad. Ever since I moved to New York, it's been debt after debt. Aren't you tired of it? If you're not, I am." She couldn't help but be harsh. No one would enjoy spending every single cent they earned on debt. Debt she had no idea of. "Carly, you know I don't want to. I'll try to stop." He promised. She hummed lazily. This wasn't the first time she was hearing such. Clearly, he would still go back. “Sure, whatever. Just make sure you’re on top of things this time, okay? No more last-minute emergencies,” "I will, sweetheart," “Yeah, well, you’d better,” she replied tiredly as she stirred the coffee in her mug. Her dad was probably just saying this. A couple days from now, after this had been paid, he'd get into another debt and would come calling. And she would continue to pay. ‘Okay... that aside...’ Now, her main problem was work. She'd taken leave yesterday on grounds of her being ‘sick’ just to avoid Chris. Unfortunately, she couldn't also skip work today. So, she had to go. Realistically, she was already working under one of the directors and if things didn't go awry, she shouldn't meet him. But there was always a chance of her being sent there for something. So, she was still very anxious. She sighed, glancing at the watch on her wrist. 7:19 am. Well, she had to get going or she'd be late. Arriving at the office, she strolled through the lobby ignoring the looks she was receiving. It wasn't a new thing. On her first couple of days here, she'd made quite the scene. The director she was working under, Mr Faber, was known for going after the attractive young women working in his office. He'd harass them ‘playfully’ and just because he had a pretty high position in the company, they'd try their best not to react to his actions. So, when she arrived, he'd wanted to try the same with her. Carly who got her butt pinched when she bent over to arrange some files had immediately turned back around and socked that damn i***t right on the face. He'd fallen over holding his nose and for a couple more days was walking around with red nose. Yes, she did get fined. But it was all worth it. The only regret she had was that she didn’t completely put the pervert to sleep. That's all. But from that time, she turned into some sort of spectacle in the company. And it wasn't a good one. The other girls who were putting up with Mr Faber had not been pleased that she wasn't fired. So, they had some sort of grudge against her. It was quite foolish in her opinion, but it was also their business. So, she ignored them. She soon reached her desk, immediately noticing something was wrong. Her belongings were neatly packed up and her desk was cleared as if she was about to be kicked out the door. She paused, ‘Well, it did happen after all.’ She glanced around, turning to a fellow assistant, Alice. "What's going on?" Alice was one of the few who stayed clear from office drama and also one of the more sensible ones that didn't hate her for defending herself. "I'm not sure," Alice hesitated to answer, glancing at Mr Faber’s door, "They just finished packing them up. Mr Faber says you should go see him when you arrive." Carly didn't know what exactly she was feeling. She wasn't at all happy about being fired but at the same time, she also expected it. On a more positive note, getting fired meant she wouldn't bump into Christopher Lennox at all. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she made her way to his office, pushing the door open without knocking. Mr. Faber looked up from his paperwork, his expression immediately turning twisted. His twisted expression combined with his funny looking red nose was quite a sight and Carly barely held herself from laughing. She coughed to hide her amusement. "Sir, Alice said you asked for me?" "Yes. You've been transferred," he said, not hiding his dislike for her. "Effective immediately. Someone will come by shortly to show you to your new office." Transferred? Carly blinked, taken aback. Why was she transferred? “Transferred? Why?” She narrowed her eyes, looking straight at him. "Is this because of the punch? I told you it was a mistake. I was supposed to punch the pervert behind me but it hit you instead." Mr. Faber’s face flushed an unflattering shade of red and Carly almost spurted out laughing. He was getting a taste of his own medicine. He sneered. "You’ll find out soon enough. Trust me, you’ll need all that… ‘charisma’ of yours where you’re going. I pray you last long here." He sounded so hateful. Carly raised her brows, not backing down. "Oh, I will." Just then, a tall, sharply dressed man entered the office. He glanced at Carly for a moment before turning to Mr Faber. “Ms. Daphnis is to come with me,” he said. His tone obviously showed that he would tolerate no excuse, so Carly turned round to follow him. Deep inside, she wanted to ask where she was transferred to. And who was she going to be working under this time? They entered an elevator and she saw the man touch a button going towards the top floor—executive territory. She'd never been there before, probably because she was still quite new here. But the others who'd been here for longer all said getting to the top floor really wasn't for everyone. The elevator stopped and opened into a corridor. With polished floors and expensive art hung om the wall, this felt like another world from the floor where she used to work. Damn! Finally, they stopped at a grand door and the man finally spoke. "This is where you'll be working." He said as he pushed the door open. He pointed to a couple of desks, in a corner, with group of focused employees. "This area is for the secretaries." They barely glanced up at the both of them, a stark contrast from the others downstairs who only seemed to gossip all day. She was going to love working here, for sure Then, he led her further in and they came to her front of three doors. He led her to the door on the right and pushed open the door. "This will be your office." He said, gesturing inside. Carly looked in, in disbelief. This was her what? She turned to look at the man to make sure he wasn't joking. "Are you sure this—" He cut her off before she could finish. "You'll settle in here and your new position is Mr Lennox's personal assistant. His office is the one in the centre and you will be in charge of whatever he assigns to you." At once... Carly froze. Mr Lennox? Suddenly, the reason for her abrupt transfer seems to come to light but she hoped it was a misunderstanding. At least, it shouldn't be Chris. "Well then, have a good day, miss." As soon as he finished, he turned round closing the door behind her. She stood there, considering the next plan of action. Should she run off before the man comes in? Or stay and wait to be executed by shame? ‘Stop. He probably won't remember you.’ she tried to convince herself. She pushed down all her rowdy thoughts and started arranging her things. Whatever happened, she would deny it. She didn't know him, that night never happened and she wasn't the one. Suddenly, she heard the door open and her heart stopped. She turned round quickly. And there he stood. Christopher Lennox, staring straight at her with cold grey eyes. "Calanthe, I see you've settled in.”
