Work time

I wake up the next morning to an empty bed. “What a surprise.” I checked my phone, “Wow that’s a lot of texts.” They're from my best friend Alyssa, who’s in jail for attempted murder, even though it was to protect someone dear to us. I look at the texts that read, Girl what’s up been a while? Did Alex take your phone again? I swear I’ll get the girls on him. I take a deep breath and reply with, I’m alright, no need to involve the gang. She instantly replies. Don’t worry I’ll be getting out soon so we can get him. You don’t want to end up back in jail, do you? Fine I won’t. I put my phone down and get ready for work. I work at daycare by day and at night I’m a maid. I start walking to work passing by the usual spots, I see my “old friends” and they give me a mean look but I just smile at them. I walk in and right away the kids hug me. “Hi, auntie.” That’s what the kids like to call me. “Auntie, what took so long?” “Well you see kids Auntie had to say hi to her old friends.” I look over and see Matt, he helps me with the kids. “Hey, Matt.” He looks startled. “Oh hey, is that a new hair, your dress smells nice.” “What?” The kids begin to laugh. “What I meant was your hair smells nice and is that a new dress.” I giggle a little. “Thank you and yes this is a new dress.” He smiles at me. Two of the kids Lucy and Marcy come up to me. They’re twins and 4 years old. “Hi Auntie, can you guess which one is Lucy and which is Marcy?” “The one on the right is Marcy and the one on the left is Lucy.” “You got it right again Auntie, How do you always get it right?” “I don’t know I can just tell.” My main job is to take care of the babies but I usually have to help Matt. It's now six o'clock so I wave the kids goodbye and finish helping Matt clean up. “I don’t get it how are you so good with the kids?” Matt asked. “I had some experience when I was little, when my brother went off to school I had to take care of myself.” “What about your parents?” “Oh well, they were off at work,” I said quietly. “Oh well, I must be off.” I wave to Matt goodbye and begin to walk past the park where I first met Matt and the kids. I smile at the thought of how Matt blushed uncontrollably when he first saw me. I keep walking and eventually, I arrive at the main gate it’s huge and gold-like. I use my key card they gave me to get in, walk up to the front door and ring the doorbell. The young mistress of the house opens the door. From what I know, she was an orphan and the master had adopted her. Her name is Star, and he named her that because she was as beautiful as the midnight sky. “Hello Star it’s been a while.” She is very shy so she doesn’t talk much, it’s only when she needs help. She gives me a little wave and then runs off. I walk in and right away I can see what needs cleaning. Her dad Mr. Smith is usually at work by now, he is the manager of a very elite hotel for important people. I head into the room they set up for me, it’s a big room with everything a room needs and more, like makeup, a huge closet, and the best part a hidden passageway. I change into my uniform, it’s kind of like the normal maid outfits but Star was the one that made it. It’s a black colored dress with red lace and a red apron and on the apron, there is a big black heart. I walk around the mansion cleaning and I stop in front of a particular room I was ordered not to enter but I don’t know why. I walk past it and I hear something, I hear a little boy say “Mama.” I call for Star but she doesn’t answer. I brush it off thinking it was the wind and continue working. Later as I’m hanging the laundry out to dry I see someone behind the sheets, thinking nothing of it I continue hanging them. “Mama” I hear again. “Whose there?” I turn around to see a little boy about the size of Lucy and Marcy. “Hello, are you lost?” “No, I’m not lost, mama.” He said in a sweet innocent voice. I look around and see no one. “I’m not your mama sweetie, but I can help you find her.” He looks a little sad like he’s about to cry so I offer him to come in for a snack. We sit down in the kitchen and I give him a cookie that Star and I made. “What does your mama look like?” “She has red hair, and green eyes, and is my mama.” I think to myself that sounds just like me except for being his mother. “How old are you?” “I’m this many” He puts up three fingers. “Let’s go to my room mama.” “Your room, you have a room here?” “Yep.” I follow the little boy up the stairs and see Star sitting at the top reading a book. She looks down at us staring at the little boy. “ADAM!” she yelled. The whole time I worked here I have never heard her raise her voice, it was quite surprising. “You’re out of your room?” Star then looks at me, covering her mouth embarrassed for yelling. “Star, calm down, it’s alright, we are going back to his room.” We finish walking up the stairs and we stop in front of the room I’m not meant to go in. “Oh, so this is your room.” “Yeah let’s go in and play.” He said in a cute voice. He pushes open the door and before I walk in I hear a knock on the front door. I walk down the stairs towards the door having Adam and Star following behind me. I open the door and see that guy. I quickly close the door, look around and open it again. Looking at his face it’s startled and puzzled. “Hello sorry about that I didn’t expect to see you here.” “It’s fine, I’m the new Gardner.” “Oh really well let me show you to the garden.” I take him by the hand and lead him to the greenhouse then we step into the bright room. “Wow, you have so many flowers!” “Ya we have Roses, marigolds, lilies, sunflowers, daisies, Tulips, daffodils, and many more flowers, we also grow some fruits and vegetables.” “Dang that’s a lot of things to take care of and you managed to keep them all alive while you were looking for a new Gardner.” “Yes it was hard, but I did have some help from Star and even the master helped a little.” “Ok, so what needs to be done?” “Well I didn’t get around to watering the vegetables, so you should start there.” As I start to walk away, I asked, remembering something. “Oh yeah, I never got your name.” “The names Dylan, what’s yours?” By the time I heard his name, I was already out the door. I walk back inside to see a bigger mess, clothes all along the stairwell, toys all over the floor, and tiny muddy handprints all along the walls. By late evening, the master comes home to finally clean house. “You did a good job.” “Thank you, master, I’ll see you next week.” “Oh, before you go I need to talk to you about the room you, aren’t allowed to enter.” “Oh alright.” “Have you ever seen a little boy around the manor?” He asked. “Oh yes, he is adorable.” “That’s surprising.” He said with his eyebrows raised. “But if I may ask where is his mother?” “Well you see Adam’s mother was one of my old maids but she grew very ill and passed away a few years ago, Adam usually stays in his room but I guess when he saw you he thought he saw his mother.” “Well, that would explain why he called me mom.” I laugh a little. “Well, I have to go.” “Alright have a good night.” He said waving goodbye.
