The rest of the day was a blur. I navigated the hallways like a ghost, my mind replaying the scene in the cafeteria. Jessica's words, sharp and cruel, echoed in my ears. Some people just don't belong at these things. The phrase felt like a brand, a scarlet letter marking me as an outsider.
I avoided the cafeteria after school, choosing to linger in the library instead. I buried myself in a book, hoping to lose myself in another world, but the words on the page blurred before my eyes. I couldn't shake the feeling of being judged, of being different.
When I finally emerged from the library, the hallways were nearly empty. I walked towards the exit, my footsteps echoing in the silence. As I approached the main doors, I heard someone calling my name.
"Heather!"
I turned to see Ethan jogging towards me, his expression a mix of concern and determination.
"Hey," I mumbled, avoiding his gaze.
"Hey," he said, stopping in front of me. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," I lied, my voice flat.
"No, you're not," he said, his eyes searching mine. "What Jessica said… it was awful. She's just… she's like that."
"It's fine, Ethan," I repeated, my voice tight. "Really."
"No, it's not fine," he insisted. "She shouldn't have said that. And you shouldn't let her get to you."
"Why not?" I asked, my voice rising slightly. "Because you and your friends are nice to me? Because you let me sit at your table? That doesn't change anything. I'm still the new girl, the outsider."
"That's not true," Ethan said, his voice soft. "You're one of us now. We want you there. At the dance, and everywhere else."
"But Jessica's right," I said, a wave of self-doubt washing over me. "I don't belong. I don't fit in."
"You do belong," Ethan said, his voice firm. "You belong with us. And you're not going to let Jessica, or anyone else, tell you otherwise."
He paused, his eyes searching mine. "Look, I know this is hard. But you're smart, funny, and you have green eyes that are really pretty. Don't let her take that away from you."
I felt a blush creep up my neck. "Ethan…"
"Just think about it, okay?" he said, a gentle smile spreading across his face. "The dance is going to be amazing. And it won't be the same without you."
He turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, my heart pounding in my chest. I watched him disappear down the hallway, his words echoing in my mind.
You belong with us.
I wasn't sure if I believed him. I wasn't sure if I even wanted to believe him. But as I walked out into the cool evening air, I couldn't deny the small flicker of hope that had ignited within me. Maybe, just maybe, I could find a place in this new world. Maybe, just maybe, I could belong.
