“I’m asking you to play a role for a limited time” I stepped Closer anger sharpening my voice. I have only heard who you get from it. Nothing has been said about me. He gave a slight smirk then paused looked at me and said protection, I laughed out loud before I could hole myself protecting from what I replied still laughing He frowned, his eyes flicking with a fraction of frustration. I think he hates been laughed it He replied you won’t be overlooked anymore. That answer didn’t feel complete but I didn’t have time to stand there waiting for answers because something about the whole conversation felt prepared like it had already been decided before I even walked into it. I pushed the folder back to him, No I said it again and for the first time since the night began something in his expression froze again Not anger,Not frustration, But certainty. “I already tried he said” That made me pause “And??”they all said yes to quickly I looked up at him and said is that your reason, that’s the only one that matters, the silence between us stretched. I should have walked out then I did walk out, I turned, stepped away, and didn’t look back.good luck finding your wife I said over my shoulder with the biggest laugh in my throat. Behind me he didn’t stop me, he didn’t call my name, he didn’t follow, and somehow that felt worse because Damien black wood doesn’t chase he decided. The air was cold outside the estate. I was freezing outside but somehow my inner body was hot. I kept working until a car drove in front of me and the driver got out. It was Damien’s driver, “Ms Thompson he said please get in” I looked him over and continued working forward he kept screaming and begging behind me that he was going to lose his job and I know he was joking Damien was ruthless like that.i look back at the estate there was no sign of him for some reason that hurt me like a part of me wanted him to chase I wanted him to really mean it. I reluctantly went back as he pulled the back door open. We got in and he started the trip. The road from the estate to my small apartment was a good 1 hour and 30 minutes. The road was free at night stalls were still open. The world moved freely but my heart was too numb to do or say anything. The driver broke the silence. “ His not a bad person, you know” “You don’t know him” I said with a flash of annoyance in my tone. The driver let out a small chuckle “ I have worked with him long enough to know he doesn’t waste time on things he doesn’t care about”. That stayed with me longer than it should have because he was right. When I got home I didn’t talk I went to my room took a cold shower while my head replayed everything that had happened, when I was done I sat on my bed with my phone in hand demian’s name stared back at me something in me wanted to reach out, Tell him I wasn’t an arrangement Tell him how insane he is But I didn't. I locked my phone and had a really nice long nap. Morning came fast. The buzz of my phone woke me up. It was Damien. I stared at it and clicked my phone shut when I went to take a bath, had breakfast and got ready for work. He called several times after that but I didn’t respond. When I was at my desk he came to work. I stood him and greeted him like nothing was wrong. He stared at me for moments too long, even my close friend at the company noticed. After he had gone to his office and everyone was sited she leaned in and asked, Ava how was the banquet last night why did Mr Blackwood look at you like he wanted to skin you alive I looked at her with a shocked expression, “He did?” She nodded frantically. I said I didn’t even notice. I said the banquet was fine because there was no way I was giving her details. The walls had ears. As we were talking and smiling from ear to ear HR called me to the office The HR manager Mrs Willam’s looked at me from head to toe and said this is your resignation and it has been processed. My heart dropped “I.. I… I didn’t resign, I said , voice shaking. She said it was submitted this morning under your name. I used the table in front of me to steady myself. I needed this job. Ma I didn’t she said I would have to apply again to get a job that my resignation had already been approved by MR Blackwood himself. I laughed under my breath, cold and quiet. And that was when I understood it. Damien Blackwood doesn’t chase. He removes options.
