I rolled in bed all night until I finally fell asleep from frustration. My body woke up very early. I was sooo tired. I was hoping it was all a bad dream but it wasn’t. The morning sun crept through my room burning my exposed legs, I rolled over and checked my phone and there it was again 3 missed calls from Demien black wood. I ignored it, stood up and took a nice cold shower.
When I got back I checked my phone again. My fingers hovered over his number but the humiliation of yesterday suddenly blurred my vision. I carried my laptop sat by the widow and brought out my old research. When I was in college there I saw all the companies I had researched before all of this.
I started applying to them one after another while thinking to myself I’d Damien ever thinks he could keep me down then he doesn’t know me at all, by noon I had already sent over 6 emails, by evening I have sent over 24 emails.
The next day I got my first interview,I almost cried out of relief for the first time since all this I felt light I felt free, I said to myself maybe Damien isn’t as powerful as I thought while dancing in my room.
The next morning I dressed my best and looked the part, the interview went very well the manager Practically offered me the position we talked for over and hour plus after the interview,by the time I left the building it was already 4 in the evening I was planning to go home change into something casual and go to my parents house to have dinner.
When I got home I saw a freshly dropped package sitting at my door I looked around and saw that no one was there it was sent to my address I smiled picked it up cause nothing could ruin today for me immediately I got in I drop it on the sofa played really loud music went to take a shower got dressed and was about to head to my parents house but the box kept staring at me I picked up a table knife slashed it open and there it was a note how was the interview my blood ran cold I instinctively dropped it moving back a few steps I didn’t tell anybody who else knew before I could process it my phone rang my hands were shaking. I answered looking for a glimpse of hope.
“Miss Thompson” a professional voice rang out
“Yes” I replied voice shaking
We regret to inform you that we have decided to move forward with another candidate."
My smile disappeared.
"Oh."
The line disconnected.
I stood there staring at the letter in my hand and reflection on my phone like it had all the answers.
Just like that, it was gone. I told myself not to over think that these things happen. People get rejected all the time. That doesn’t mean I’m not great at what I do.
So I applied again, and again and again same thing everytime by the end of the week my eyes were swollen from constant staring at the computer and not getting enough sleep I was worn out my savings had dropped my moms Medical bills wasn’t paid I this things don’t pay for them self I was genuinely frustrated for the first time since all this pure panics started setting in.
Not fear, but panic. The kind that sits in your chest and refuses to move. The following week I stopped checking my emails every 5 minutes cause honestly there was no need for that, the answers were always the same. I was taking a short nap in the sitting room and I heard a knock on the door which was wired because I wasn’t expecting anyone. I stood up to answer but no one was there. I looked down and there it was another package with no address , just my name “Ava Thompson. This time I didn’t take it in. I looked both ways and the hallway was strangely quite so I brought out a kitchen knife and cut it open.
Inside was a thick folder. I picked it up and walked back into my apartment, my hands trembling slightly. I sat on the chair and placed the folder on the table for a while before building up the courage to look there. It was boldly written in capital letters.a note attached to it you are running out of options “ Miss Ava” suddenly knew who was playing this game. I small laugh escaped my lips I went into the room and put on the most expensive and most beautiful dress in my wardrobe while saying to myself it’s time to settle to scores,
