SETTLING THE SCORES

874 Words
I took my car keys and headed straight to his company. The executive floor was exactly how I remembered, quiet, polished, expensive, everyone looked important, everyone looked busy,Nobody looked happy. Immediately the receptionist on the third floor was me. She stood up fast. “Miss Thompson” I didn’t spare her a glance. I kept walking with a mask of fury on my face. I looked like a model on a runway show . Several heads turned as everyone was waiting for the drama. I ignored them all. I wasn't here to make friends, I was here to burn a building down. My perfectly stiletto heels struck the marble floor with sharp deliberate clicks, today I didn’t look like the woman who had gotten fired or had gotten rejection after rejection after the past few weeks, my perfectly fitted dress hugged my figure. My hair fell over one shoulder in soft waves,My makeup was flawless. I said to myself in a low whisper If Damien Blackwood wanted to ruin my life, the least I could do was look beautiful while destroying his day. A secretary stood up immediately. "Miss Thompson, you can't” "Watch me."I didn't stop walking. Another assistant hurried toward me. "The executive meeting is in progress." "Good." "Mr Blackwood specifically instructed” "Even better." The conference room doors came into view. Large,Glass,Intimidating,Usually. Today they were just doors. The assistant moved in front of me. "Ma'am, please." I pushed the doors open, The room froze no one had ever disturbed the executive meeting more less an ex employee Every conversation died instantly,Executives.”,Board members,Investors. All staring at me. And at the head of the table Damien. For the first time since I met him, genuine surprise crossed his face, Gone within a second, but I saw it And that was enough,His eyes moved over me slowly. Not because of the dress,Not because of the interruption.Because he knew immediately that I wasn't here to negotiate. I was here to burn something down. "Ava." His voice was calm. Too calm. I smiled. "Good afternoon, Mr Blackwood." Nobody moved,Nobody breathed,I reached into my bag. The marriage contract landed on the polished conference table with a loud slap I smiled while staring into Damien’s eyes. Several executives jumped,The room somehow became even quieter. I tilted my head. "You forgot something." Damien's jaw tightened. Just slightly. Most people wouldn't notice. I did. "Ava," he said. "Don't." For the first time, there was warning in his voice. Interesting!!! I yelled my voices raising I turned slowly toward the room. "Since everyone is here, maybe you can explain why your CEO keeps sending marriage contracts to former employees." A few executives exchanged shocked looks,One man nearly choked on his water. And there it was the first c***k,Damien stood Slowly and dangerously “Ava” her said again this time more controlled. The room suddenly felt smaller But I wasn't scared anymore I was furious a part of me wants part of me wanted to go there and slap the hell of of him but I kept myself in line "You fired me." I pointed at him. "You sabotaged every job opportunity I've had since." His eyes narrowed. I kept going. "And if I receive one more mysterious package at my apartment, I promise you this won't stay inside these walls." That did it,Something changed. Not in his face,In his eyes,A flash Gone almost immediately But it was there Concern Real concern I saw it And suddenly I knew there was something Damien Blackwood didn't want exposed Something bigger than a marriage contract Something bigger than me, For the first time since this nightmare started I realized he wasn't the only one holding secrets. I got home a few hours later but my anger hadn’t faded. If anything it had gotten worse. I threw my heels across the room and fell onto the couch, my mind replaying everything that had just happened. Why did Damien suddenly look cornered when I mentioned I wasn’t going to just stay within the walls? My eyes dropped to a wooden box sitting in the corner of my sitting room, it was my dads things I needed a distraction from Damien so I walked towards it and sat beside it I opened it my mind racing I checked everything bit by bit until my eyes fell on an envelope it was brown with a look that shows it wasn’t put into this box recently I opened the letter and as I thought my dads Hand writing stared back at me. He wrote My throat tightened instantly. "Ava honey,If you're reading this, then something has gone terribly wrong. There are things about the partnership that I should have told your mother, things I ignored because I trusted the wrong people. If anything happens to me, there is a blue file..." I stopped My eyes scanned the page again And again the letter ended there no explanation, no signature ,nothing my heart started pounding,I dropped the note and immediately searched through the box Photographs, Documents ,Receipts,Old contracts,Nothing,No blue file,I searched again Then a third time Still nothing my breathing became uneven. Because suddenly I wasn't wondering why Damien Blackwood looked worried. I was wondering who took the file my father wanted me to find.
