YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME

492 Words
When I stood up the corridor outside already felt quite , people were working, talking, existing like nothing had just happened like nothing shifted but I knew they knew. I picked up the box belt it in front of me and signaled to Ellie that I was heading out she stood up from her desk and walked with me we stood in front of the elevator it arrived almost immediately as though it had been waiting for me immediately they doors of the elevators opened I and Damien locked eyes Ellie saw how intense we both stared at each other and she asked me if I was okay before I could say a word Damien’s voice cut in Not urgently or angrily “Ms Thompson my office now” he demanded Everything and everyone around us seems to have paused. I could feel the eyes of everyone behind me. I tightened my grip on the box and let out a small humorless laugh because that was the only thing I could do. “You did this,” I said, and there was no careful phrasing in it, no attempt at diplomacy, just the blunt shape of accusation that had been building since the moment HR spoke his name without speaking it directly. Let’s talk in my office. He said his eyes met mine without hesitation, as if what I had just said was like music to his ears. That was what broke something in me, not the dismissal, not the lack of denial, but the fact that he could stand there and reorder the moment so easily that my words felt irrelevant the second they left my mouth. I stared back at him without flinching, my voice already rising. Do you think after firing me without an explanation I would follow you up the stairs like you didn’t just ruin my perfectly planned life? Because of your own selfish desires? "Ava!" he barked. "I said my office."I looked at him, and for the first time the full weight of it settled in. I had no control over what had happened before, and I had no control over what was happening now.I straightened my shoulders and met his stare."You don't get to summon me anymore," I said coldly. "You already took my job. What, do you want my head too?" For the first time, something flickered across Damien's face. Not guilt,Not regret,Something darker. I walked into the elevator with Ellie while he walked out he still didn’t chase. Ellie held my hand and comforted me without questions, and somehow that was exactly what I needed. The elevator doors slid shut. For the first time since HR called me in, I felt like I could breathe. Maybe it was over.Maybe Damien Blackwood had already won and moved on.Then my phone vibrated. “Unknown Number,A message. I frowned and opened it. You can leave the building, Ava. You can’t leave me”. My blood ran cold.
