The apartment has never felt this quiet or cold and my air conditioning was off. Usually silence was comforting, it was peaceful, it gave you that silent peace after a long day.
But today the silence felt heavy like it was watching me like it was ready to grab me immediately I moved an inch.
I sat on the cold floor with the wooden box opened things scattered across the room, all the pieces of a life I was trying so hard to understand but still couldn’t. Old photographs of people I didn’t know and have never met business documents, receipts, contracts, and memories I wasn't ready to revisit. I picked up the letter again, my hands tightening around it and my father’s hand writing was staring back at me.
for years, I had forgotten what it looked like, I had forgotten how much comfort I felt when he wrote me little notes. But today I felt no comfort only a sense of fear I couldn’t explain,
I looked at it again reading the first line out loud again, “Ava honey if you are reading this right now something has terribly gone wrong.”
I swallowed hard. Why would my father write a letter to me? Why would he hide anything from me and my mother? We used to tell each other everything. And something in me keeps telling me that Damien knew something because a man who never looked at me five years ago when I would chase him around before he went abroad without getting a single answer now wants to marry me?
Everything felt off but I couldn’t put a pin on anything yet, so I placed the letter carefully on the coffee table in my living room and started looking through the box again. Maybe I missed something. I searched through every document one more time. I opened every folder, checked every envelope, and looked through every page.
It was completely empty. No blue file, No explanations ,No answers, nothing!
A frustrated laugh escaped my lips.
“This can’t be happening, what the hell!”
I leaned back against the chair, internally frustrated. I stared at the ceiling. Thinking to myself last week my biggest problem was finding a job. Now I’m dealing with mysterious packages, a powerful CEO who seems determined to control my life, and for some reason I can’t fully comprehend a secret my father had taken to his grave,
My phone suddenly rang I looked down mom, I hesitated I didn’t want to worry her but a part of me still thought that she knew something so I answered
“Hello”
“Ava honey my mothers voice immediately softened you sound weak my love are you okay?”
A smile escaped my lips even though she couldn’t see me “ I’m fine mom “
Thank Goodness you called there’s something I wanted to ask you, there was a pause on the other end, ok honey I’m listening.
Do you remember dad’s business partners? The silence that followed was different, it was controlled, it was strange, the hesitation made me more scared than the letter I had seen.
“Why are you suddenly asking me this “
“My mother asked voice shaking”
“Because I found something”
Another pause
“Ava”
The way she said my name made my heartbeat faster,
“Why aren’t you telling me” I asked voice breaking,
My mother sighed
“ Your father was a good man but he trusted people too easily,” her voice sounded tired.
I sat up straight “what people mom”
She didn’t answer immediately. Then she said quietly
“The Blackwood’s “
My blood ran cold and cold sweat ran down my spine. I was shocked. “Mom, wait , you mean Damien’s family?”
“Yes honey “she replied,
Damien’s father and your father built something together many years ago but after a while things changed,
“What changed I asked immediately”
“I don’t know everything your father stopped talking about long ago he always said some things are better left alone at that time I didn’t think much of it. But now I don’t know”
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Mom, did Dad ever mention a blue file?” The silence that followed answered before she did.
"You found something, didn't you?" I closed my eyes “ I found a letter I replied”
She was silent for a while before saying
Ava whatever you do be careful that sentence shifted something in me because my mother was not someone who got scared easily.
After the call ended I stared at the letter again, and for the first time I understood that maybe Damien wasn’t the only one hiding secrets.
Damien’ pov
Across the city inside BLACKWOOD CORPORATION Damien stood alone in his office overlooking the city cars streamed through the streets while people hurried in and out of buildings. people were crossing the roads going in and out of buildings selling and buying things but Damien wasn’t looking at them he was looking at the message on his phone.
“She found the letter”
His jaw tightened. A second message appeared: she is looking for the blue file.
For the first time the fear on Damien’s face was so visible he wasn’t annoyed he, wasn’t angry he was scared. Because he knew what was inside that file and what would happen if she found it before he did.
His phone rang and he picked it without even looking at the caller ID.
“How did you know”
A dark deep voice answered you should have kept her away from this Damien expression hardened
“Don’t involve her.”
A quiet laugh came from the other end
“You still don’t understand do you?”
Damien remained quiet
“The moment AVA THOMPSON found the letter she became a part of this”
The call ended
Panic was written all over Damien’s face, he grabbed his coat and practically sprinted towards the elevator For the first time in years, Damien Blackwood wasn’t thinking about winning. He wasn’t thinking about control. He was thinking about one thing getting to Ava before they did.
