About a year ago you left New England, the place you had grown up and the place where all your dear friends resided. Your father had moved you all to Wisconsin, much to your dismay. It wasn't as if you didn't try to embrace your new home but despite your attempts you were miserable. All your dear father ever wanted was for you to be happy. So when he realize his actions have caused you so much heartbreak, he packed up all your things and moved you back.
Never before have you been so filled with joy. Stepping out of your carriage and on to familiar soil was enough to send a wave of excitement through you once you arrived back to your real home. Although twelve months had past, your love for this village hasn't wavered. It seemed as if everyone's love for you hadn't either. You were greeted with much affection by the March family. The only person in town who didn't give a warm welcome was Laurie, the young man who you expected to be most thrilled that you were back.
You've known Laurie since the moment you both could walk and from the day either of you could utter a word you've been undeniably close. The friendship you had was strong and it was rare that the two of you weren't seen together. This caused a lot of people to gossip about how you and Laurie would wed some day. The idea of this once made you and Laurie gag but as you got older, marrying Laurie was all you ever wanted. Unfortunately you moving away seemed to squash any hopes of such a thing coming true.
But now you were back. Perhaps a wedding was all but possible!... or was it. With the way Laurie acted toward you. He hadn't come running to your house to see you again as you had expected him to. In the beginning you didn't take too much offence. Maybe he was busy or hadn't caught word of your presence in town.
So once you and your father were settled back in, you went looking for him. You finally found Laurie at his home. He was moments away from walking through his front door when you called out to him. "Laurie!" You waves eagerly, grinning as your heart pounded in your chest. At the sound of his voice Laurie turned toward you. To your surprise the look he gave you was all but cold. He's never gazed upon you in such a manor so you were taken aback. It was enough to make your smile vanish. You were forced to watch in disbelief as Laurie turned away from you and walked into his house, without so much as a word.
That was the only interaction you've had with Laurie since you moved back. You couldn't bring yourself to confront him out of fear and confusion. Instead you spent most of your time inside the home you had missed so much, contemplating what you had done wrong. It took Amy convincing you to accompany her to a party for you to finally go outside.
Little did you know that you'd be disappointed soon after entering the party. "You never told me that Laurie would be here" you sent Amy a quick scowl once you spot your told friend d across the room, drinking what you could only assume was alcohol out of a glass. Amy opened her mouth to respond but then someone called her name across the room and she was forced to leave you standing there alone to greet said acquaintance.
Realizing that you had made a dreadful, you smoothed your dress nervously. It would have been wiser to remain at home by the fire, with a novel in hand. Surely that would have been more enjoyable than standing here all by yourself, with the boy you once loved standing mere feet away.
Just as you were trying come up with a way to leave, you were approached by a young man you didn't recognize. Smiling politely at you, he told you that his name was Joseph. He was handsome truly. So much so that you blushed when he asked for your name and you completely forgot about your intention to escape the party.
Your lips parted as you tried to introduce yourself but before you could answer Laurie appeared. He was clearly a little drunk. The best you at seen him wearing a few moments ago was gone, his white undershirt was unbuttoned as if he were hot, and his tie was undone. "My friend I'd watch out for this one if I were you" Laurie advised Joseph, placing a hand on the man's shoulder as he slurred. This was the first time he's acknowledged you since you arrived in home again and he was speaking of you as if you were a disease. "She'll steal your heart and break it just like that".
Unsure of where this accusation was coming from, you heart shattered in your chest. Now thoroughly embarrassed you hit Laurie on the arm with the fan you had brought with you. Until now you've wallowed in sadness. However in this moment your emotions shifted into anger. How dare he treat you this way when, as far as you were concerned, you've done nothing wrong. "You are despicable Laurie!" You cried out, storming outside just as your eyes began to water.
It wasn't long after the cool night air blew on to your face did you hear footsteps run after you. Turning around you thought that you may come face to face with Amy, who may have heard the commotion. In reality it was Laurie following you outside. You made the mistake of being concerned for him for a second, worrying that with his limited amount of clothes that he'd catch a cold. Then he recalled what had occurred and you glared.
"How could you be so terrible to me Laurie? While I was gone all I wanted was to get back to you and now that I'm here you've been nothing but nasty. What have I done to deserve your behaviour?" You questioned, tears slipping down your cheeks at this point.
You watched as Laurie made the same mistake that you did. He appeared to forget about any strain between you both and his eyes softened at your crying. Hope that he may end this whole charade here overcame you but then these hopes were crushed when Laurie's jaw clenched.
"Surely you know why. The letter [Y/N]?". At this you blinked, as you had no clue what he was referring to. "I sent you a letter asking you to marrying me and I got no answer. I could have understood if you said no. That I could deal with but you ignored my confession completely! Do you know how much sorrow and confusion I've experienced over the past year over you". Silence fell between you. All you could bring yourself to do was stare at him. "Even now you say nothing. How could you expect me to act any other way?".
"I'm saying nothing Laurie because I don't know what you're talking about!" You countered. "I received no letter from you Laurie. Much less a letter where you suggest marriage!". This revelation caused Laurie to suck in a breath. Certainly this wasn't what he was expecting to hear. "Do you really take me for a person so cruel that I'd simply ignore your admission of affection, even if I did not share it?! After all we've been through Laurie I would never do that to you".
As you finished saying your peace Joseph, the kind young man from earlier, stepped outside. He appeared to have the intention of coming to your rescue and truthfully you were grateful that he was here. Looking at Laurie filled you will so much anger because of his selfishness and foolishness. How dare he assume the worst of you without doing more investigation. This could have been solved long ago if he had perhaps asked you about his letter calmly instead of choosing to act as if he were a child.
With this in mind you turned to Joseph and smiled. "Joseph, I know we've only just become acquainted but I'd very much like to go home now. Would you walk me?". Joseph agreed to this. Walking past Laurie as if he weren't their, Joseph allowed you to take hold of his arm. The two of you began to walk away from the party but not before you called over your shoulder. "Oh yes and Laurie, if I had gotten your letter... I would have said yes".
