I contacted a former high school classmate and managed to get the address for the baby's first birthday celebration.
On the phone, she sounded genuinely surprised, "Rosalie, how did you and Caius end up breaking up? We all thought the two of you would get married. I never expected him and Alessia Holloway..."
All I could do was force a bitter smile.
Even I, didn't know when exactly we had broken up. Or when the two of them had gotten married.
One was the best friend who once swore she would always stand by my side.
The other was my first love, the man I had dated for ten years.
A few years ago, when I doubted whether our long-distance relationship could survive the distance, Caius had solemnly promised me, "Rosalie, I'll wait for you to come back. You're the only woman I'll ever love in this lifetime."
I believed wholeheartedly in his feelings for me. I couldn't understand when he had started to change.
My classmate's words became increasingly painful, stabbing straight into my heart.
"Honestly, it's strange. Back in school, they could barely stand each other, but now they're ridiculously in love..." As she spoke, she sent me Alessia's social media account.
We had followed each other on every platform before, yet I had never seen this account.
In the pinned live photo, the man's large hand gripped the woman's pale wrist tightly, veins bulging beneath his skin.
I read the caption, "I finally slept with the person I loved in my youth. I have no regrets in this life anymore."
The post had hundreds of thousands of likes, and the comment section was filled with blessings for the couple.
But I was the only one who noticed the date it had been posted.
That day, Caius and I had a terrible fight over something trivial. I spent the entire day calling him nonstop. He disappeared for a full day, and his phone remained switched off.
Alessia had even reassured me at first, "Caius went to a bar to drink away his frustration. Don't worry."
Two days later, Caius flew overseas to see me. A man as proud as him had actually lowered his head and apologized first.
With reddened eyes, he kissed me frantically and said, "I'm sorry" hundreds of times.
Only now did I finally understand that Caius hadn't come to me that day because he truly wanted to reconcile. It was because, after sleeping with Alessia, he felt guilty.
The second pinned post was a partially censored marriage certificate. Even so, I recognized Caius instantly from his silhouette alone.
The caption read, "Shotgun wedding. Thank God for bringing us together!"
At that time, it had not even been three months since my miscarriage.
I had always blamed myself for losing the baby because I was too focused on work, and because of that, I might never have children again.
My emotional state worsened day by day, and I started taking antidepressants.
During our video calls, Caius comforted me softly, "Rosalie, it's not your fault. We could still have children in the future."
Meanwhile, Alessia took a leave from work and flew over to take care of me personally.
Just like before, she hugged me gently and comforted me. "Rosalie, everything will get better."
During that period, the two of them treated me unbelievably well, taking on all of my pain without complaint.
Now I finally understood.
It had all come from guilt.
