The next moment, Mrs. Frostmere, Caius' mother, stormed over in a fury, pointed at my nose, and spat in my face.
"Rosalie Fairbourne, how dare you come back here!" she shrieked, pointing at me furiously.
"Back then, we told you to return home and get married, but you refused," she continued angrily. "You insisted on staying abroad. Was your career more important than having a child? My poor unborn grandson died because of you! Now that Caius finally has an heir, do you still dare come here and cause trouble? You can’t have children yourself, yet you blame others for it. Thank goodness my son never married you!" She snapped bitterly.
Mrs. Frostmere tightly held Alessia's hand and announced in front of everyone, "Alessia is the only daughter-in-law I acknowledge. If you want to marry into the Frostmere family, it'll only happen over my dead body!"
The moment those words fell, even Caius's expression changed.
The relatives present immediately began criticizing me with vicious insults.
"A hen that can't lay eggs still has the nerve to make a scene?"
"She couldn't even protect her own child. No wonder Caius abandoned her."
"The Frostmere family has passed down through a single heir for three generations. She can't have children herself, yet she won't allow others to have them either. How vicious."
My face turned pale, and my body swayed slightly.
During my third year working abroad, I became pregnant.
The Frostmere family urged me to return home so we could officially register our marriage, but my company was in the middle of a critical project, and I couldn't leave.
Caius supported my decision to stay and continue working, enduring the pressure while convincing his family to wait a little longer.
But during an onsite inspection trip, an explosion occurred at the construction site. I was lucky to survive, but the baby was gone.
After learning that it would be very difficult for me to become pregnant again, Caius comforted me with red eyes, saying he would never blame me.
Yet every time I opened my eyes in the middle of the night, I would see the sorrow on his face.
Mrs. Frostmere would cry and curse at me over the phone, "Rosalie, give my grandson back! How can there be someone as selfish and irresponsible as you in this world?"
Her words haunted me like a curse, tormenting me day and night. Because of it, I suffered from depression for two years.
At that moment, the insults came crashing down on me from every direction.
Through blurry tears, I looked toward Caius, but he avoided my gaze.
"Rosalie, you should go back first. As for my mother... I'll try to persuade her."
I left in a miserable state.
No one blamed Caius for betraying me. Instead, everyone cursed me for causing trouble.
My phone suddenly chimed.
A message from Alessia appeared on the screen.
Alessia: Rosalie, please... meet me tomorrow.
The tears I had held back for so long finally fell.
