"What?" I muttered in disbelief, "Are you deaf now? I said, Natalie and Quinn are getting engaged" Helen replied much louder this time. "But how? He's.. She's…" I stuttered in disbelief, Quinn had just broken our mate bond just three days ago and now he was getting engaged to my sister?
"They've been seeing each other for a while now and since Quinn rejected his mate, they can now be together" Helen replied. A part of me wondered if Helen knew I was the mate that Quinn rejected for her daughter and she was secretly taunting me.
"What about Natalie's mate?" I asked. Natalie had also met her mate just a few weeks back, he was a weak omega just like me and she would always talk about how she wanted to break the mate bond. "She rejected him" Helen replied in a nonchalant tone and handed me a list. "That a list of all you're in charge of during the engagement party" she dropped the bombshell.
I stared at her in disbelief, wasn't it enough that her daughter stole my mate? Now she was going to make me work at their engagement party. "I can't do it" I retorted and shoved the paper back into her hands. I may have taken all the abuse and torture but there was no way I was going to take this.
"Whoever said you had an option, you are working at the engagement party and that's final" she snapped and threw the paper at my face. "Think of it as an engagement gift from you to them" she added and left.
It took everything in me not to break down in tears, not like I had anymore to shed. I stared at the content of the list, I had to cook the food, serve the guest, clean the venue and attend to any of Natalie's needs.
I gripped the paper tightly, almost ripping it apart, when I heard a voice say "take it easy there Gen."
I spun around to see Klein, my best friend and only friend standing at the doorway. Klein was an Omega wolf but he wasn't as weak as me, plus he was very wealthy so he was well respected by the other wolves in the pack. He was the only one who ever talked to me and never mentioned my weak wolf.
"How long have you been standing there?" I asked and shoved the paper in my back pocket so he wouldn't see its content. Klein was a good friend and he would get into fights with Helen for my sake, but Helen had begun spreading false rumors about us having an affair even though Klein had a mate. He was much older than me too so that made the rumors worse.
If Klein were to see the content of the paper, he would march up to Helen's room and start a fight with her for my sake. "Just got here, why were you staring at that paper like it did something to you?" He asked and leaned against the door frame. Although Klein always stopped by to visit me, he always made sure never to actually come in to avoid Helen's tantrums.
"Um..was I? I.i. Where are you coming from looking so muddy" I quickly changed the subject. Klein shot me a suspicious look but didn't push it. "I went hunting with Floral," Floral was his mate. She was really nice and had a bubbly personality but thanks to Helen's false rumors, I would never get to see that bubbly personality again.
"Did you catch anything?" I asked. He stretched out his left arm which had been behind him the whole time to reveal a dead hare. "Caught it with my bare fangs" he laughed and tossed it on the ground ignoring the fact that the blood would stain the tiles.
"I caught five of them and thought I should come give you one" He stated as I examined the dead animal. From the bite marks around its body I could tell it died a really gruesome death. No surprise there. Klein's wolf was the fourth strongest in the pack and he was the best hunter.
"Maybe next time I go hunti…" he paused and spaced out and I could tell he was mind-linking Floral. She was probably waiting in the car. "Sorry I have to go, Flora's getting a bit impatient" he explained and bade me goodbye.
After he left, I picked up the dead hare and secretly took it to my room. I returned to the living room to clean up the blood before anyone would spot it, then went to cook the hare.
Natalie returned later that evening and didn't fail to taunt me with the fact that she was getting engaged to my mate. As much as I wanted to ignore her, I couldn't help but be affected by her words. Having had enough, I retreated back to my safe space, my room.

The Day of the engagement finally arrived and as expected the hall was packed. Natalie was a social butterfly so it wasn't unexpected that her engagement would be packed. Guests from far and wide came, Natalie even mentioned that her friend who was the daughter of the alpha of a neighboring pack would be showing up, I think she said her name was Steph.
As I was serving the different guests, from the corner of my eyes, I spotted Nat and her friends whispering something amongst themselves and laughing and something told me they were planning to do something and I wouldn't like it.
One of Nat's friends signaled for me to bring some punch to her and I obliged, trying to be as cautious as possible. As I reached them, I felt something hit my foot and before I knew what was going on I fell face first on the ground causing the punch to spill all over her dress.
The room went silent apart from the sound of music blasting from the speaker and Nat's friend screaming. "Have you gone crazy? Is this your way of taking revenge on me? By ruining my engagement!" Nat yelled dramatically.
Before I could say anything Quinn was by her side and he grabbed my arm roughly baring his fingers deep in them and I could feel his claws begin to come out. Just when I was sure it was all over, a voice yelled "LET GO OF HER!"
