Chapter 4 WEDGED IN a drugstore phone booth, McCloud dialed the number of Sheila Mayo’s home. He wanted to tell her that so far as he knew she was absolutely in the clear; that unless the little gun she had used, now in Lieutenant Brannigan’s possession, could be traced back to her she had nothing to worry about. Besides Sheila, there were a few other odds and ends bothering McCloud too. About his own position he was not any too pleased; in running out on Brannigan he had chosen what seemed to him the lesser of two evils. He had believed it almost certain that the police would eventually get around to a thorough search of his person; in addition to Sheila’s purse they would find a West Coast Indemnity envelope containing fifteen thousand dollars.
