Maxine couldn't stop thinking about Clevio after their encounter in the forest. She felt drawn to him, but at the same time, she was scared of him. She didn't understand his behavior towards her. He was rude and cold, yet she could sense that there was something more there, something that she couldn't quite put her finger on.
She decided to go to the local bar to try to take her mind off of things. As she walked in, she was surprised to see Clevio sitting at the bar, a drink in his hand. She hesitated for a moment before walking over to him.
"Can I buy you a drink?" she asked, trying to be friendly.
Clevio looked at her, his expression unreadable. "I don't think that's a good idea," he said, his voice cold.
Maxine felt a pang of hurt. She didn't understand why he was being so rude to her. "Is everything okay?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Clevio sighed, his expression softening slightly. "I'm sorry, Maxine. I didn't mean to be rude. It's just that...I don't want to get involved with you."
Maxine felt a sense of confusion. She didn't understand what he meant. "Involved with me?" she repeated.
Clevio nodded, his eyes scanning the bar. "You're my fated Luna, Maxine. The moon goddess has chosen us to be together, but I can't...I can't accept that."
Maxine felt her heart skip a beat. She had heard about fated mates, but she had never thought that it would happen to her. She didn't know how to feel about Clevio being her fated mate. On one hand, she was drawn to him, but on the other hand, he was rude and cold towards her.
"Why can't you accept it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Clevio looked at her, his eyes intense. "Because I don't want to hurt you. Being with me is dangerous, Maxine. I'm the Alpha of my pack, and my enemies will use you to get to me. I can't put you in that kind of danger."
Maxine felt a sense of hurt and anger. She didn't like the way that he was treating her, as if she was some kind of fragile thing that needed protection. "I can take care of myself," she said, her voice firm.
Clevio looked at her, his eyes softening. "I know you can, Maxine. But I can't take that risk. I care about you too much to put you in danger."
Maxine felt a sense of confusion. She didn't understand how he could care about her and still be so rude to her. "If you care about me, then why are you so cold towards me?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Clevio looked at her, his eyes intense. "Because I don't want to give you false hope, Maxine. I can't be with you, no matter how much I want to. It's not safe for either of us."
Maxine felt tears welling up in her eyes. She didn't understand why he was being so cruel to her. She had never done anything to deserve this kind of treatment. "I don't understand," she said, her voice shaking. "If we're fated to be together, then why can't we be together?"
Clevio sighed, his expression sad. "Because the moon goddess fates us, but we still have free will. I can't force myself to be with you, Maxine. It wouldn't be fair to either of us. It's better if we just stay away from each other."
Maxine felt a sense of despair. She couldn't understand how someone could be so conflicted about their feelings. She wanted to scream and cry, to lash out at Clevio for making her feel this way, but she knew it wouldn't do any good. She had to accept his decision, no matter how much it hurt.
"I understand," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'll stay away from you, if that's what you want."
Clevio looked at her, his eyes softening. "It's not what I want, Maxine. It's what I have to do. I care about you too much to put you in danger."
Maxine nodded, trying to hold back her tears. She knew that Clevio was right, but it didn't make it any easier. She turned to leave the bar, trying to put some distance between herself and Clevio. As she walked out into the cool night air, she felt a sense of emptiness inside her. She knew that she had to move on from Clevio, but she didn't know how.
Days turned into weeks, and Maxine tried to keep busy with work and friends, but she couldn't stop thinking about Clevio. She wondered if he was thinking about her too, or if he had moved on. She tried to push him out of her mind, but she couldn't seem to shake him.
One day, she received a message from Clevio. It was short and to the point.
"We need to talk."
Maxine felt her heart skip a beat. She didn't know what Clevio wanted to talk about, but she knew that it couldn't be good. She agreed to meet him at a nearby park, and she spent the next few hours trying to prepare herself for what was to come.
As she walked into the park, she saw Clevio sitting on a bench, his eyes fixed on the ground. He looked up as she approached, and she could see the pain in his eyes.
"Maxine," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"What's going on?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Clevio looked at her, his eyes intense. "I can't stay away from you, Maxine. I've tried, but I can't. I care about you too much."
Maxine felt a sense of confusion. She didn't understand why Clevio was so conflicted about his feelings. "What does that mean?" she asked.
Clevio stood up, his eyes fixed on hers. "It means that I want to be with you, Maxine. But I can't guarantee your safety. My enemies will come after us, and I don't know if I can protect you."
Maxine felt a sense of hope. She didn't understand why Clevio was changing his mind, but she didn't care. All she knew was that she wanted to be with him. "I don't care about the danger," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "I just want to be with you."
Clevio looked at her, his eyes softening. "Are you sure?" he asked.
Maxine nodded, her heart racing. "I'm sure."
Clevio took her hand, and she felt a surge of electricity run through her body. She looked up at him, and he leaned down to kiss her. It was a soft, gentle kiss, but it was enough to make her heart skip a beat.
