A Good Creepy

835 Words
Hilda was rather excited after she hung up the phone with her old friend. Of course she needed to see a resume and cover letter but from what she gathered, this young lady could be a good fit. She knew Robin. She knew Robin’s past and her family history. She wasn’t sure if her children knew. Robin has always been a private person and knew she would always have her walls up with anyone. She wasn’t sure how her marital relationship was and even if he knew of Robin’s heritage. But, no matter. This girl HAD to fit. She was running out of options. She still had two other positions to fill and a website to check for applicants. She was able to get the custodial positions posted after she got home last night. But because she needed a code for the nursing position she waited until she got to her desk that morning. She was glad her friend called. Now she doesn't have to do it. Well, fingers crossed, she wouldn’t have to.  Looking through the papers that were scattered on her desk, Hilda realized she still needed a front desk clerk. Night nurse or not, the new person couldn’t do two jobs. So, she still had to put the word out for the desk clerk. Before Gert left, she had informed her there was a message on the machine for a young man inquiring about the custodial position. Gert said she told him to send a resume. Hilda couldn’t figure out how people knew the positions were open. She was stumped but too busy to figure it out at the moment. She was just grateful things were moving along. She will have to make time to check her email. Turning to the computer screen she scanned the edge of the monitor and noticed the sticky sticky notes were missing. She knew she left them up there. She looked under the desk, under the pile of papers and around the front of the counter. Nothing. If someone were to walk in, they would think she’d lost her marbles and was not attempting to find them. “I’m losing my mind!” she muttered to herself. “No you're not.” She heard a deep gravelly voice pop up behind her. Gert may be able to take the surprise attacks, but Hilda’s heart couldn’t take it. She jumped and turned around to meet the voice. “Gus! Please stop… lurking!” Hilda held her hand to her chest trying to catch her breath. “My apologies Ms. Hilda. Didn’t mean to disturb you. But, you didn’t lose those little papers on the monitor box thing.” He pointed at the computer. “I called a friend at the paper and had them post the opening. I added a nurse, custodian, and desk clerk. Hope you don’t mind.” Hilda imagined this was the first time Gus had ever said more than one word to her and it wasn’t followed by a woosh and disappearance. On top of that, he did this without instruction but to help. She loved her work family. “Gus, you have no idea how much I appreciate you. I don’t tell you enough.” She smiled earnestly. “I didn’t realize it was your shift. Has the day gone by that quickly?” She regained her composure. “No, I wasn’t doing anything and came in to check the paper. See if they did indeed post it. It appears they did, if Gert got a call and your friend knew about it.” He smiled. It creeped her out a bit. “Have a nice day Ms. Hilda. I’ll be back in a few hours.” She turned away to look at the door for just one second and when she turned back to look at him and thank him again, he was gone. No sign. He didn’t exit the door, he didn’t even pass in front of her and had to if he was leaving the building. She remembered the secret door near the back of the reception area. ‘Sneaky.’ she whispered with a smirk and turned back to the front desk. “Time to check out these interviews.” Hilda spent the rest of her day calling the people that responded to the ad to set up interviews. She had three people set up for an interview today, two of them for the clerk position. She has two set up for tomorrow, one for custodian and one for nurse. And finally, three set up for the day after. One for custodian, one for clerk, and one for Nurse. And, that would be her friend, Robyn’s daughter. Bryn. “Not bad, Gus. Not bad at all.” She let out a breath of air. Standing, she turned the light off at the desk and headed down the hallway for her rounds. Gert would be there soon to trade shifts so she needed to get her shift closed out.
