"Agnes! Please don't go!" Hilda yelled after her. "Please, you are a valued part of our department. We need you!" Agnes didn't even look back. Hilda just heard her scream, walked frantically past the main desk, grabbed her purse and coat, and ran to the exit.
"What happened"? Jessy asked as he approached the desk. "Agnes quit, I'm assuming" Piercy answered from behind his broom before Hilda could respond. He passed by without another word.
"How do you know... how does he even know?" Hilda asked, looking at Piercy with a confused look on her face. He wasn't even near the area when Agnes started her escape.
"Because I heard her yelling, I QUIT, from the stairwell. I was cleaning up the mess Frank threw at her". He yelled from the end of the hall.
"WHAT!? Frank threw something at her? Why in the world was she even around him, she was told to stay out of that wing!" Hilda shook her head and grabbed her jacked. "Jessy, watch the desk for me. I'm going to see if she is still in the parking lot". Jessy nodded and walked around the desk. "She's probably long gone, like the last 5 this year."
Hilda shook her head again and ran out the door. He was right, of course. Agnes was long gone. Tire tracks in the parking lot said she left quicker than the car wanted to go.
"How am I going to keep good help this way!?" Frustrated, she headed back into the building.
"Gone?" Jessy asked, knowing the answer already. "Yes, quickly by the looks of it". Hilda replied. She hung her coat on the back of the door and went to her desk. Sitting down, she began paperwork for a replacement. "At least she was here longer than the last four." Jessy politely reminded her. "Gotta give her credit for that". he added and lightly patted Hilda on the back as he moved past.
"Why is it I can keep people like you, but that one position I desperately need I can't keep filled to save my life?" Hilda wasn't asking anyone in particular. But Jessy answered her anyway. "Can't blame them all on Frank. The last two left because of the sisters''.
"The sisters". Hilde repeated under her breath. Shaking her head she looked at her computer screen and started the post for an open nursing position. "Sometimes I wonder why I am still here".
"Because your mom is here?" Jessy asked/answered sarcastically. She looked up at him. "Don't you have something you need to do?" He snickered and turned to walk away "You know you love it here!" he yelled on his way down the hallway.
"Go check on Frank, please! I'd like to know why he was chasing her!" She yelled after him. He waved over his head as an answer and turned the corner out of sight.
She sat back down and went back to work on the post.
"Can I go home?" Peircy asked, scaring Hilde out of her seat. "NO! Go back to work!" Peircy chuckled like a cartoon dog and went back to work. He was hard to get motivated, but he stuck around no matter what. At this place, Hilda thought, that is an endearing quality.
